9-12 hours of work a day is a lot, especially for a single parent, and you have the issue of transport as well.

How old are the kids and is there anyone who could help around the house occasionally?

I seriously doubt any of you people would be talking like this face to face with strangers in real life. In Middle Eastern culture at least.. in Arabic, before someone mentions something like "garbage".. "W/C".. etc while talking, he/she would precede it by the words "yekramk Allah" for "May God hon...

I'd say go for the work experience in the UK/US for at least a couple of years. Employers in the UAE do look at experience, especially for expatriates, and as you say, it'll also do you good once you eventually go back to where you're from. Although now with the sale of homes to non-nationals, it is...

I'm surprised there was no dramatic reaction to the comments on Pakistanis smelling bad, which did sound a bit racist.

I did raise the issue of certain cultures smelling bad due to ingredients in their traditional food though once on my forums. It can be explained but people shouldn't generalise.

This pagan moon god which some Christians claim is the origin of the name "Allah" is in fact a goddess called "al-Laat". There were also other goddesses. But this isn't the source of the name. "Allah" is a combination of "Al" for "The" and "Ilah" for "god" (note, it's god with a small g signifying n...

The current Dubai International Airport is undergoing a massive expansion which should be finished by the end of 2006. The expanded airport will have the capacity to handle 60 million passengers a year. Also, a new airport, the Jebel Ali International Airport, is being built and it will be done comp...

Taxis in Dubai are really bad. Actually, a few weeks ago they had a report in the newspaper that the tourism authority started "monitoring" taxi drivers and what they say to their passengers, and they found that lot of drivers were dissing the UAE and Emiratis when speaking to tourists. They were gi...

Maybe it's because Emirates Towers and 21st Century are on the same side of the road. The cars go in the direction from 21st to Emirates Towers on that road, so there's no need to take a u-turn or anything. When going from Emirates Towers to 21st, you have to use a tunnel and return the other way, t...

It's easy to lose trust in taxis. I've been in several taxis in several countries which have charged me more than necessary or taken the long route thinking I'm stupid and won't know. That doesn't really worry me much as reports of taxi drivers taking female passengers to remote areas and raping and...

Now now.. no need for name-calling.

I am an Iranian-Emirati.

BTW, I've talked about Dubai's growth way too much elsewhere. I know most of Dubai's projects by heart.

Hmm.. what do I do in the evenings? Well it mainly depends on what time of year it is, because during the academic year I have to study and I'm in Dublin. I don't do anything special really. I go out and about mostly in Dubai and visit family..etc. Over here I just go to the supermarket.. occasional...

Actually, I don't sit at tables where alcohol is being served, whether there were Muslims or infidels consuming. And I don't enter bars or nightclubs.

It's Islamically unacceptable.

I didn't say I don't enter restaurants with alcohol. That's hard to avoid these days. I said I don't sit at tables where alcohol is being consumed... and I don't enter bars, because bars were made specifically for drinking and there's no point in entering it, plus it's a place of sin. Clubs are also...

I don't believe you need any special vaccination for visiting Dubai.

I mean even in Saudi Arabia during hajj season, the only vaccine required is for meningitis. So for the UAE.. nothing really.
