Most posters seem to assume that because of the powerfull jewish pro-Israel lobby, the US support Israel, counter to US interests in the region (oil). This of course sounds a bit spooky, a relatively small ethnic group has so much influence on US foerign policy, that the US goes against her own interests. One must wonder who a small group can accomplish this? I believe it is more complex and more nuanced than jews controlling the US. Here are some thoughts:
-Yes, there are jewish groups who still try to make use of the guilt feeling because of the Holocaust. And seems to be effective up to a certain level. Jews in the US are not a monolithic group though, large differences exist. Just compare AIPAC with J-street.
-Zionist Christians have much more electoral power than jews. Instead of jews, the Zionist Chistians have more influence on US foreign policy regarding Israel than jews.
-Perhaps, and this is just a theory, Americans in general can identify with Israel as a mission-state.
-the US sees Israel as a military strategic ally in the area
-Throughout history the US certainly didnot support Israel unconditionally, contrary to some conceptions.
