Tripoli: City of Fear, Death, Chaos and Hunger!!! Feb 24, 2011
Why is the world not doing anything about this ongoing massacre in Libya? Shame on everybody!!!

This mad man (Gaddafi) needs to be stopped (captured or killed) immediately. By whatever means it takes, like a swift military intervention by the US/UK/Italy… or any other armed forces!.

It appears he’s well on his way to massacring thousands more of his own people before it’s all over! Pretty sad!!!

Robert Fisk of the Independent finally made it to Tripoli, and here is his ghastly report:

Anybody intervening will be blamed for imperialism and colonialism and will have its soldiers butchered. Groups of people from the soldiers' home countries will cheer at every dead intervening soldier. Thats the way it is.

Better question would be, why did his (silent) supporters did not intervene earlier?

I'm with TJ on this - people are being massacred, it is clearly not the will of the people that Ghadaffi stay on.. and indeed Obama is condemning the Libyan state actions. More than words are needed.

Fisk, IIRC, draws a link between the US humiliation in Somalia (black-hawk down etc) with the genocide that took place in Rwanda/Burundi. The argument is that the inglorious pull out there pretty led to major hesitation in sending in troops into future hot spots. The UN and others predicted that there would be trouble in Rwanda, asked for more troops when the killings started - but were crippled by a lack of international commitment.

I'm not blaming the US for this - just repeating what I think is a valid argument.

My view is that the African Union should have stepped in and sorted things out.. and this is also the case here. The problem is that most leaders in Africa are more aligned with Ghaddafi than the Libyans.

But in a nutshell - I do think more should/could be done.

Is Libya still a member of the UN human rights council? I believe countries asked for Libya to leave, but not sure whether it is already implemented.

IIRC Libya was the chair for that council just a short while back - and there was some controversy over that fact. However, I may be thinking of some other council/committee that Libya was due to chair.

Well, Libya's still a member of the UN's Human Rights Council. But they did get a strongly worded condemnation from the UN:

The members of the Security Council expressed grave concern at the situation in Libya. They condemned the violence and use of force against civilians, deplored the repression against peaceful demonstrators, and expressed deep regret at the deaths of hundreds of civilians. They called for an immediate end to the violence and for steps to address the legitimate demands of the population, including through national dialogue.

The members of the Security Council called on the Government of Libya to meet its responsibility to protect its population. They called upon the Libyan authorities to act with restraint, to respect human rights and international humanitarian law, and to allow immediate access for international human rights monitors and humanitarian agencies.

...

The members of the Security Council will continue to follow the situation closely.

Be afraid, Libya, be very afraid.

Here is an interesting statement from the International Criminal Court:

"The decision to do justice in Libya should be taken by the Libyan people. Currently, Libya is not a State Party to the Rome Statute. Therefore, intervention by the ICC on the alleged crimes committed in Libya can occur only if the Libyan authorities accept the jurisdiction of the Court, (through article 12(3) of the Rome Statute). In the absence of such step, the United Nations Security Council can decide to refer the situation to the Court. The Office of the Prosecutor will act only after either decision is taken".

ICC claims no jurisdiction. No "The Hague" for Qadaffy it appears.
