Sharjah To Lash Unmarried Couple

Sharjah to lash unmarried couple Nov 15, 2010
I understand no one wants Bangladeshis living in their country, but lashing the female, who is a Muslim Filipina, is beyond good taste - both will be deported after receiving their lashes and serving one year in prison.

Although the article does not mention any objections to the ruling from human rights organizations, groups in the past have condemned lashings and other aspects of Islamic law, such as hand chopping and stoning, as 'torture'.

The article does point out that only Muslims receive lashings in the UAE, so at least in Sharjah these 7th century laws and punishments are not carried out against non-Muslims.

I did hear about this but am wondering if they followed through. A lot of times there is a lot of noise and suggestion of extreme punishment here in the UAE but than its watered down before the sentence is actually delivered. Ridiculous in this day and age but each country has its laws. I read about a guy I think he was Japanese that was caught in North Korea for some smuggling crime and was given the sentence of 25 years "hard labour". Surely that just means "you will die working like an *rse". Also in China they pass out the death penalty regularly for white collar crimes. The lashings sound better already...nah not really.
