Summer is a time when freaks come out all over London.

The signs are pretty tame compared to what goes on in Speakers Corner every Sunday (year round). Youngsters having provocative signs protesting on the streets of London is a cherished tradition of ours - (although I liked the poster of 'Jihad - wrong both ways' by a secular protestor very imaginative).

The perplexing thing is that in the UK there is indeed only one law - the law of the UK. The one law allows for variations amongst different groups - eg. common law spouses vs those marrying officially, Sikhs get exempted from some laws (eg wearing crash helmets, concealed weapons IIRC), Jews have family courts within the legal system and so do Muslims. These parts of the UK legal system have been going on for years (decades in some cases) - then someone started raising the loon notion that Shariah was taking over the UK and there were 2 laws.

Anyway, facts aside - people do react to scare stories (on both sides).

I think the people of Britain are starting to recognize the damage that multiculturalism has done to their society.

We are seeing certain segments of the population demand more from the government and a government that is ever more willing to bend over backwards to appease their demands.

Just a recent example that comes to mind was when British police officers prevented missionary people from venturing into certain neighborhoods.

Of course, the idea of the British police obstructing Muslims from proselytizing would be unimaginable. But such an instance would create an uproar amongst the liberal elites in British society.

You would have every politician come out and apologize and assure the world that Britain allows Muslims to convert others. Muslims, of course, would milk such a PR disaster and demand more concessions from the British government, all the while claiming that their treatment is equal to the Jews' during the Third Reich. Incitement anyone?

But since the authorities did not restrict the freedoms of Muslims, but of British Christians (including ones who were of Indian descent?), there was a complete black-out of this in the British press.

The same incident has happened a few times in the States.

In Dearborn Michigan, a lower court ruled that it was illegal for Christians to distribute leaflets at an Arab-American festival - so as not to offend Muslims.

Thankfully, judges who knew the First Amendment overturned the ruling but recently American citizens were stopped from handing out fliers outside an Arab-American festival.

And in France, the police stopped Frenchmen from handing out pork and wine (something completely legal) so not as to offend Muslims.

In other words, Western laws are being bent or broken by the authorities all to appease a certain, unpopular segment of the population.

You got all that from a couple of hundred protestors in London?

Geez, what would you have made out from the many more who march and demonstrate in favour of Communism/Socialism etc.

Loons see danger everywhere it seems!

What's great about Britain, is that probably 99% of both sets will have been on demonstrations together - eg opposing the Iraq war and anti-Israel protests. Those who are arsed to go out on protests are a minority, but they are a great part of our democracy (even those calling for an end to democracy).
