Yup! The BJP is controlled by an extremely powerful organization called the RSS, their origins date back to the time of the British. They are the parent organization. As a whole the organization is powerful socially and considering their enormity they are relatively honest too. Although within the organization there is a powerful fringe minority who cling on the the fantasy of a India only for Hindus. And this is where the trouble starts.
The Babri Masjid issue is all but over. After nearly a decade the judge has awarded the territory to the Muslims (Sunni Wafq Board) and the Hindus. This is one of those decisions the court took to maintain the peace and harmony of the country. No one doubts that the land rightfully belongs to the Muslims. But with the BJP continually making this a poll issue, closure was important and one can only pray that it does indeed bring closure to the issue.
The bone of contention being that Hindus believe the site on which the mosque once stood to be the birthplace of their Lord Ram. Off-course a court cannot act on belief. So during the court case, two idols present in the mosque were given as evidence that the place belonged to Hindus. Some believe the presence of the idols constitutes a miracle. The actual fact of the matter is that a group of right wing members of a religious organization planted the idols when in the mosque when it was sealed off to the public (incidentally while the BJP was in power)
So yes Babri Masjid was their doing. And because of that violent moment in India's history the BJP actually came to power in the center. Ever since that incident there has been a trend in the BJP to incite communal violence every-time election nears. The logic is rather simple, incite communal violence, over some some trivial issue and should they not be a trivial issue, plant an issue..generally communal violence = riots, with atrocities so horrible that they scare the majority community into thinking they need to be safeguarded. And this generally gets the BJP elected. This tactic has been deployed successful in Gujarat, Mumbai and Orissa.
Recent sting operations have also suggested that there is a segment within the RSS who are quite open to terrorist attacks and assassinations, having already indirectly played a role in a few bombings across India with the intention of creating communal strife.
That said the RSS is much more that mere fanaticism. They are involved with education, charity works, etc etc. They are phenomenally huge. Their numbers itself constitutes a nation. Once you join the RSS it becomes a way of life!
As a whole the fringe elements in India do not constitute a majority, they are only a significant minority. Unfortunately the fault lies within the ruling Congress, with their hierarchy system of governance and rampant corruption, they really leave you with no choice but to desert them. Even traditional Congress loyalist like the Muslim community are sick and tired of their politics. And if the recent elections are anything to go by it's rather evident that the Congress is on the way OUT! But it's not like people don't give the Congress a chance, I mean c'mon the most powerful person in the country is technically an Italian who still can't speak fluent Hindi. This is possible only in India! Unfortunately she has not been able to reign in corrupt politicos within her party and while her son does have charm it does not translate into anyting tangible(votes). In my opinion the next big hope will have to come from Priyanka Gandhi lest the Congress find's themselves relegated to the backseat.
