Rachel Corrie, an Irish ship, is on its way in an attempt to break through the Israeli blockade. Here’s hoping that the Israeli military won’t react wildly once again and do something crazy like killing innocent civilians on a peace mission.

Ireland to Israel: Let the new aid ship break the Gaza blockade

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen urged Israel to let the vessel to finish its mission. The ship was carrying 15 activists including a northern Irish Nobel Peace laureate.

“The government has formally requested the Israeli government to allow the Irish-owned ship … to be allowed to complete its journey unimpeded and discharge its humanitarian cargo in Gaza,” Cowen told parliament in Dublin.

An Israel Defense Forces officer pledged that the newest ship would also be halted, setting the stage for a fresh confrontation after Monday’s deadly clash.

“We as a unit are studying, and we will carry out professional investigations to reach conclusions,” the lieutenant said, referring to Monday’s confrontation in which his unit shot nine activists aboard a Turkish ferry.

“And we will also be ready for the Rachel Corrie,” he added

But activists said they were determined to follow through with their plan. “We are an initiative to break Israel’s blockade of 1.5 million people in Gaza. Our mission has not changed and this is not going to be the last flotilla,” Free Gaza Movement activist Greta Berlin, based in Cyprus, told Reuters.

Israeli officials were continuing to deport the activists who were aboard the six-ship flotilla. One hundred and twenty of the nearly 700 passengers were transferred Tuesday evening to the border crossing with Jordan, from where they will be returned to their home countries.

Passengers on the MV Rachel Corrie include Northern Irish Nobel peace laureate Mairead Corrigan-Maguire and Denis Halliday, an Irish former senior UN diplomat, and several other Irish citizens.

Irish Foreign Minister Micheal Martin told parliament he had spoken with Halliday on Tuesday afternoon.

“We will be watching this situation very closely — as indeed will the world — and it is imperative that Israel avoid any action which leads to further bloodshed,” Martin said.

Israel’s Army Radio reported that the ship would reach Gazan waters by Wednesday, but activist Berlin said it might not attempt to reach Gaza until early next week.

“We will probably not send her till (next) Monday or Tuesday,” she said of the 1,200 ton cargo ship. The Israeli navy stormed aboard a Turkish ferry leading a six-ship convoy on Monday, killing nine people in what authorities said was self-defense but sparking a world outcry, a crisis in diplomatic relations with Turkey and condemnation from the United Nations Security Council.

The Rachel Corrie was carrying medical equipment, wheelchairs, school supplies and cement, a material Israel has banned in Hamas-ruled Gaza, organizers said.

Mark Daly, a member of Ireland’s upper house of parliament who had been due to join the convoy but was refused permission to leave Cyprus, told Reuters in Dublin that the ship had fallen behind the rest of the convoy because it was slower.

Passengers aboard it had heard about the attacks but decided not to turn back, he said.

“After having a discussion among themselves about what to do, they decided to keep going,” Daly said.

Nearly 700 international activists were processed in and around Israel’s port of Ashdod on Monday evening, where the six ships of the blockade-running convoy had been escorted.

Among the activists were many Turks but they also included Israelis and Palestinians as well as Americans and many Europeans.

The Interior Ministry said 682 activists were ordered deported, and that 45 left on Tuesday, while others were jailed as they challenged the orders, or in hospital being treated for injuries.

Mate, Israel will bully, kill and demonize anyone that oppose its apartheid policy. They probably will call the Irish people terrorists and part of Al Qaeda, as they have been doing to any group that disagree with its policy, this has been its technique in order to deceive the international community, lol

The fact that Irish and Irish people publicly voicing their anger at this Apartheid rogue government of Israel, tells that Irish people and Irish government have guts to stand up and do the honorable thing.

You get to love the Irish.

I’m wondering what have been the action and response of those Gulf oil rich countries. Please tell me they are doing something!!!!!!!

It appears that the Gulf oil rich countries are taking it a bit further than Obama. If you summarize Obama's statement is comes down to: Ooops. Gulf countries are peppering their statements with "threats" not to consider playing nice with Israel. Mubarak has opened entry into Gaza (indefinitely) for aid to pass through. (Big freakin deal!!) Strongest words are coming from Turkey.

Article in Gulf News asked the question: Does Israel rule the world?? I don't understand why so many countries have their lips pressed against the arse of Israel and don't have the good sense to remove them every time Israel farts in their face.

What's not to love about the Irish??

Israel took control, this time the humanitarians were cooperative. As you can see, violence isn't necessary.

looks like the Pirates did a better show this time round, according to Pirate central. We still need to hear from the abductees.

I guess the message that it would be hard to portray the abductees this time as raving terrorists got through. One has to ask why the first 6 boats couldn't have been boarded in day time and without the macho posturing we saw. ;)

You have to see the difference with a convoy with 700 people on board from a ship with 10/20 peepz.

Quite a tactical change. ;)

Exactly, the Israelis surely shot them selves in the foot the last time as they demostrated that even the IDF thugs when they want can do it.

But the Israelis insist that they did not expect resistance the first time round - hence why they got their ar.ses handed to them by the 'terrorists' - if they didn't really expect resistance, why not just board the boats as they did with Rachel Corrie?

I guess you can't cover all the angles when PR has to make up stories after the event.. but hey, at least they made a valiant effort.

Let's wait and see what the abductees have to say when they are ungagged.

I'll give it to the 'boys in black' they are quick learners! ;)

I have another opinion about that. First of all, Israeli's were well aware that protestors boarding the flotilla were announcing resistance before they sailed out. The media confirmed that recently. From that perspective the riot control outfits and tactical advance in early morn makes sense to me.

I don't exactly understand why Israel claims that it didn't know they expected resistance, probably to claim PR on it.

Ah well, everybody learned a lesson in tolerance (there is none) from this. Formal border crossings people. All good.

Recently a few somali pirates were shot by the crew of the ship they had Hijacked and they were with in their rights. So putting up resistance against hijackers and pirates in the high seas isn't unexpected, even international laws allow ships to carry weapons and the use of the them in event of such incidents.

And so much for the IDF commandos who got beat up and had their weapons taken away by some civillians armed with hoses and pipes DId you hear them crying like little girls on the videos. I guess these types of forces can only act butch when sitting in million dollar weaponary miles away and shooting willy nilly at anything that moves. ;)

Or maybe the Israeli commanders had seen one Rambo movie too many and sent in a handfull of comandos while hijacking a civilian humaitarian aid ship in international seas defending an illegal blockade. Like I saids earlier what were they expecting a red carpet welcome, Box of choclates and a big teddy bear.

Besides lets stick to "facts" right now we only have baised highly edited IDF videos lets see if any of the video shot by the people on board the ships ever comes out of Israeli hands, yeah I know I ain't holding my breath either.

Why would we? The Red Cross can take care of the process with Israeli's. NGO do it all the time.

No need for provocative PR. And besides, your forget that the Palestinian people normally receive around 1 billion in aid from the International community.

They get plenty. Hamas just confisqates it. But that isn't PR worthy right?

Bro youself posted what kind of Aid is allowed in. And you know very well Israelis wont allow anything other than total and complete control, maybe after this debacle they will be pressured to do so.

I heard the opposite. That Hamas is working with the community and helping it. Anyways this is not about hamas at all. It is about stopping the illegal blockade of gazza. Why should they be reduced to begging for aid in the first place ?

Gaza - A top UN official voiced concern on Thursday over the closure by the Hamas Islamist rulers of the Gaza Strip of several non-governmental organisations in the Palestinian enclave.

"This targeting of NGOs, including UN partner organisations, is unacceptable, violating accepted norms of a free society and harming the Palestinian people," Robert Serry, the UN's special co-ordinator for the Middle East peace process, said in a statement.

The Gaza-based Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR) said the offices of six organisations, including care centres for women and children, were raided by members of Hamas's security forces between May 31 and June 1.

"The de facto authorities must cease such repressive steps and allow the re-opening of these civil society institutions without delay," Serry said.

Youssef Abu Amra of the Sharek Youth Forum in the southern city of Rafah said Hamas security men gave them no reason for closing the office of his organisation.

"They just told us the office would be closed and employees should stop all activities," Abu Amra said.

^Actually RobbyG - the Pirates of Penzance misread the situation totally - all the Turks were trying to do was offer the visitors Apple Tea and sell them some authentic antique Turkish ('much better than Persian') carpets.

The problem was that the Pirates chose to visit in the middle of the night, wearing gloves and covering their faces and firing stun grenades. The humanitarian workers were just trying to be extremely friendly with their welcome - even helping some of the visitors take a load off (here, let me take this gun off you - you could hurt yourself with that) and helping put three of them off for a quick nap!

The Malaysian and Irish guys on the Rachel Corrie had the benefit of seeing the same guys (well the ones who weren't in hospital) approach in daylight and tried to tell them kindly that they didn't need their help to drive the boat..

:) :)

Anyway, should the medieval siege be lifted (and with Papa Bear in the US saying the siege is unsustainable - there's already a tangible benefit from the flotilla - not-withstanding the massacre) - then the flotilla will have indeed served its purpose of highlighting a siege which the UN calls collective punishment.

Let's hope all the future boats breaking the siege don't have their peaceful occupants shot dead!

DD - you've got to be a little charitable. Pirate Central have got to make the most of the fact they finally learnt from the Somalis on how to board a boat without shooting up the place (rule number one - do it in daylight so they can see you are armed).

They've really got to make the most of it and try and undo the damage from comedy central (aka 'idiots in the cabinet' according to Haaretz) - (I bet they were praying fervently that Michael Flattely wasn't secretly on board and would kick the Pirate boarding party).

Let's wait for the abductees to be released and hear their side of the story.

Why wait for the abductees? As if their story is gonna give additional insight into the peaceful intervention.

The answers they'll give you are limited to: anal probe, alien invasion and Aid-from-Allah... :D

Well, as I mentioned before, I tend to like to see the evidence - and I'm genuinely interested to see whether Pirate Central can report something without spin. You see, I'm essentially an optimist! ;)

Who knows, perhaps the Malaysian and Irish abductees will come out and praise the Pirates' makeover? ;)
