Rabbi apologises Sep 18, 2010
It took three weeks, and whilst some may say cynically he was pressured into retracting his hatred filled words about Palestinians.. I'll give the old guy the benefit of the doubt..

Ovadia Yosef atones to Mubarak after declaring Palestinians should die

Shas spiritual seeks conciliation after asking God to deliver a plague on Abbas, the Palestinians and 'all the evil people' in the world.
By Yair Ettinger

Three weeks after making hostile statements about the Palestinians, Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef is sending out a conciliatory message and is returning to his old positions in support of the peace process.

Yosef expressed support for the direct talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority and wished "longevity" to the Arab leaders who are partners in the process.

"My position has been known and clear for decades, on the importance of achieving peace while preserving the security of the nation of Israel," the rabbi wrote in a letter to Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

"We wish for sustainable peace with all our neighbors and we are very thankful to the honorable president for his direct involvement in the peace process in our region, which undoubtedly contributes and strengthens this important process," the letter continued.

Yosef wrote the letter to Mubarak, which was then sent from the bureau of President Shimon Peres to Cairo, translated into Arabic.

Yosef addressed Mubarak as "our esteemed and dear friend."

Peres offered the rabbi assistance in the initiative in an effort to improve the atmosphere created by statements made by the rabbi during a sermon three weeks ago.

"Let our enemies and those who hate us die," Yosef said then. "[PA President
Abbas] and all these evil people should perish from this world. God should strike them with a plague, them and these Palestinians."

The statements were strongly condemned in Egypt and around the world.

Sources in the rabbi's home told Haaretz that since the statements were made, the rabbi "was very sorry" and looked for a way of sending a conciliatory message to the Palestinians.

"I support your efforts and praise all the leaders and the peoples ¬- Egyptians, Jordanians and Palestinians -¬ who are partners and wish the success of this important process of achieving peace in our region, and preventing bloodshed. May God grant you longevity and may you succeed in your efforts for peace and may there be peace in our region," Yosef wrote.

It is amusing that Juan Cole, who famously defended Ahmadinejad by claiming that his statement to wipe Israel from the face of the earth was a mistranslation, relies on Yahoo to translate the words of Rabbi Yosef. YNet today gave a more accurate translation: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340 ... 40,00.html

Yosef did not wish a plague on all Palestinians, only the ones who “persecute Israel.”

Since Cole cares so much about accurate translations, I trust that he will correct this and apologize.

Ovadia, who heads the Shas religious party in Israel's ruling coalition, expressed hope in his weekly sermon Saturday that "all the evil people who hate Israel, like Abu Mazen (Abbas), perish from our world."

"May God strike them down with the plague along with all the evil Palestinians who persecute Israel," he said.

I presume you've written to Haaretz and perhaps are informing the Rabbi that he shouldn't have apologised? ;)

I love it when you quote your loon blogger mate elder - it invariably results in you being punked. So elder reckons the old rabbi has been misrepresented, and yet he goes and apologises! Ha ha. I love it!

Cheers,

He was definitely misinterpreted if you bothered to click on the links.

He didn't wish for genocide against Palestinians but wished for death against 'Mahmoud Abbas' and others.

Obviously, he was apologizing for what he said about Mahmoud Abbas not about a statement of genocide he never made.

Are you sure you're blogger friend is right and Haaretz, the Rabbi etc are wrong? Elder's track record is not great.

Do you agree that the Rabbi should have apologised, or are you disappointed he did so?

Cheers,
Shafique
