Al-Qaeda's full name is actually al-Qaeda al-Jihad - the base of holy war.
However, OBL lamented how everyone referred to his terror organization as simply 'the base' (al-Qaeda) ignoring the religious component that represents the movement's ideology.
To better encapsulate the group (and to the dismay of Western loons), OBL wanted a name that was more religious sounding, such as Taifat al-Tawhed Wal-Jihad (monotheism and holy war group) or Jama'at I'Adat al-Khilafat al-Rashida (restoration of the caliphate group).
The problem with Muslim terrorist groups and coming up with another name, especially one that is religious, is that it can't be taken by another group.
