Norway massacre probe leads to 19 Polish arrests
Accused have links to mass killer Anders Behring Breivik

A Polish security agency said Wednesday that 19 people have been arrested across the country on suspicion of producing and possessing explosives, as part of a broader probe linked to the Norway mass killings in July.

The Internal Security Agency said the arrests were part of a wider investigation into the illegal production and sale of explosives that was launched after Norway asked Poland to investigate people with links to confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik.

Breivik killed 77 people in Norway at a youth camp and government headquarters in Oslo in July.

Poland was asked to provide information on a man who was mentioned by Breivik as a possible source of substances that could be used in the production of explosives.

The agency said the arrests were also the result of an analysis of a manifesto that Breivik had posted on the Internet.

The agency said in a statement that large quantities of explosives were seized on Tuesday and Wednesday during a search of some 100 homes and houses and dozens of cars and garages across the country.

The search was carried out by the agency, police, border guards and firefighters.

A few dozen people, who were obtaining chemicals at a warehouse near the western city of Poznan, are suspected of using the substances to make explosives.

Good news that 'large quantities of explosives' were recovered - so it sounds like a very real threat has been averted.

This clearly makes these guys meet the definition of 'trans-national' terrorists that someone was arguing only applies to Al Qaeda.

I hope that the other nutters out there are similarly caught before they emulate Brievik.

Actually, the "threat" is coming from Left wing attacks if you want to ignore the seriousness of bomb plots.

Don't believe hate crimes fall under acts of terrorism. Otherwise, terrorist attacks carried out by Muslims would be much higher.

The story is really shocking to me, because I never would have expected this to be happening in Poland. I recall that Breivik said that he worked alone on the attack in Norway but was connected to others internationally, and now here is some evidence that it may be true. This will be an interesting story to follow, because I'd like to hear more about what their intended targets were and the reasons why!

It is no surprise that those who share Brievik's extreme Islamophobia want to downplay the very real threat this ideology has produced with Brievik and these now 2 instances of attacks and planned attacks.

What is shocking to me is how easily, it seems, these nutters are able to make explosives.

To me, it underlines that it is not lack of access to materials that limits terrorist attacks - but rather the number of terrorists willing to carry out the attacks. The Islamophobia of Brievik is spawning these very real terrorists. Wishing that they aren't actually terrorists is laughable in its desperation.

Well, we don't know if it mostly Islamophobia or xenophobia - no details on that yet.

One very real terrorist attack and two very real hate crimes. Just like the Antisemitic hate crime against the Iraqi man you downplayed a few days ago - and that was a communal attack in which the Muslim community certainly share some blame if the reports are true that he was alienated prior to his attack involving several - more than two - individuals.

I guess it's rich to accuse others of downplaying hate, Antisemitism and terrorism when we see you on a regular basis doing just that for Britain and Europe's Muslims.

You do like to make excuses for the guys who share your political views don't you eh?

I cannot understand your shock. I blame my socialistic past when partisipation in various Olympics in Math, Physics or Chemistry (don't mix up with Al Chemy) was counted as more amusing pastime for week-end than Friday praying for some teenagers.

There's no details on anything you and shafique claimed in this thread.

It doesn't say the arrested were part of an inner circle sharing Breivik's ideology or were planning terrorist attacks - that's your and shafique's imagination. They were arrested for illegally producing and providing explosives/explosive materials - most were employees from one explosives company.

It's like a gang illegally providing guns to someone who would later use them in a terrorist attack. The gang and terrorist are not connected beyond a simple seller/buyer role.

What we're seeing are two posters jumping to conclusions based on something the article never says - both of you foolishly claiming the 19 arrested were part of a terrorist cell and that an attack had been averted.

Not quite.

It was relevant in that they (Hutaree Christian Militia) were planning terrorist attacks against US citizens (the Poles in this thread were producing illegal explosives, not having arsenals of guns). Other groups having large arsenals and not terrorists aren't the issue - there are indeed many militias out in the US - what made this group different was that they were planning terrorist attacks. Illegal explosives aren't used for legitimate purposes.

You are right EH, I did assume that they were going to use the explosives themselves, not sell them to others who intend them to use them on some targets.
