Muslims outraged by a dog named Khan - demand apology Nov 06, 2010

Step aside

Well, I hope that this doesn't cause unruly riots in India and elsewhere in the Muslim world.

But Muslim leaders are saying that they are outraged that anyone would name a dog 'Khan' and that such a name actually does incite Muslims to 'act out', dontchya know?

I figure, to prevent any future nastiness like this, a supreme court justice should weigh in to tell us Westerners that it ought to be illegal to name dogs with Muslim/Arabic sounding names. After all, we are provoking Muslims to riot.

We wouldn't want these riots to give any certain group of people a bad image, so it's just best to have the government provide dog owners with a list of names that they are allowed to give their pets.

And so what? It's not like we should expect others to behave like civilized, rational people. We should just pass a bunch of laws so as not to provoke anyone else.

Muslims in Mumbai are up in arms against a United States military sniffer dog allegedly with name tag of 'Khan' that has landed in the city as part of President Barack Obama security arrangements.

On Tuesday, the German Shepherd arrived in the Mumbai airport from a Hercules C130 transport plane. The German Shepherd allegedly had a tag around its neck which read 'MWD Khan.' MWD stands for Military Working Dog. Khan is alleged to be the name of the dog.

Angry Muslims in the city and the state are threatening to protest this 'insult' to the community.

The issue became a rage when a tabloid had reported the incident and quoted veteran actor Raza Murad objecting to the dog being named 'Khan.'

Though noted lyricist Javed Akhtar had been quoted to ignore the issue and focus on welcoming the VIP guest.

Maharashtra Samajwadi Party leader MLA Abu Asim Azmi also threatened to undertake a protest. He said that the US deliberately wants to incite the Muslims through such acts and the party would stage a protest on the issue.

Prominent Muslim religious heads have expressed anger and dismay on the information of a US dog being named 'Khan.' Maulana Syed Athar Ali said that it is a known fact that Muslims detest pigs and dogs.

"To name a dog a Muslim name by US security agencies is to deliberately incite the Muslim community.
We would be meeting soon and devise a strategy to protest and seek apology from the US," said Maulana Athar Ali.

I think Maharashtra Samajwadi must be some Islamophobe or something.

Does he actually think Muslims are so dumb and childlike that they could actually be incited towards violence over the name of a dog?

Does he?

Just goes to show how ignorant some people are. Khan is not a "muslim" name at all.

Our cat was named Omar, but our friend suggest we change the name. Too bad all Arabic names are deemed as religious names and you can't name your pet what you want. Some people are just too sensitive. How dare the Mexicans name their children Jesus! (pron Hesus) We should start a riot over that one! ;)

Well, I agree this does show that there are ignorant people in all countries - Loony Pastors and Bob Spencer in the US are offended by a book they haven't actually read in full (the Quran), and these guys get offended over a dog's name.

But hey, I suspect that the story will pan out to be another one of the over-hyped hysterical 'look at how evil the Mooslims are' stories that will be quickly forgotten or fizzle away into nothing.

(Anyone remember eh wishfully insisting that the Bomb plot tip-off guy was arrested by the Yemenis before he handed himself in? And, if he's honest, he's the only extremist here who will actually welcome nutters rioting over this issue - I mean it's pretty clear he'll be most disappointed if this story is just a flash-in-the-pan and nothing comes of it.)

You may have averted the creation of a terrorist cell or two.

Sure they're similar.

But hey, I suspect that the story will pan out to be another one of the over-hyped hysterical 'look at how evil the Mooslims are' stories that will be quickly forgotten or fizzle away into nothing.

How did the non-burning of the Koran ('Korangate 2010') pan out?

"All of you are infidels. We are here to avenge the burning of the Qur'ans and the jailing of Muslim women in Egypt."

Probably an exaggeration. It's not like the Muslim spokespersons were claiming that naming a dog Khan could incite violence in the Muslim community, or anything like that.
I mean it's pretty clear he'll be most disappointed if this story is just a flash-in-the-pan and nothing comes of it.

So your big argument is that nothing major will come of it - no terror cells will be formed, no unruly mobs started.

Just Muslim spokespersons demanding apologies for their 'humiliation' and warning that violence could start if apologies aren't handed out like party favors and for the West to acknowledge its mistake in giving the name Khan to a dog.

Wow, you really have high standards for Muslims, don't you?

I suggest the US authorities let Khan the 'Land Shark' apologise to the offended parties in person? Might be an interesting video...

I have this vision of Khan also saying 'sausages' :

(I couldn't believe this clip was on youtube - ahh the memories of 'That's Life' ... 'and finally cyrill'...)

Now, that would be worth watching!

My ex-parents in law fell out with their neighbours. The neighbours bought a dog and called it after my husband. I thought that was mega funny!

I was in Zimbabwe in the mid-Eighties and a white farmer that we knew was taken in for questioning by the police for a complaint that he named one of his two dogs 'Banana'.

Quite innocent, you might think. Except, at the time time the President of Zimbabwe was Canaan Banana - and there is a law that makes it illegal to make fun of the heads of state.

What made the people I was staying with chuckle was the fact that the other dog was called 'Bob' (and the PM was none other than Robert 'Bob' Mugabe!!). No harm came to the farmer.

(Back then, Zimbabwe was a multi-party state, the commercial farms were still being run well and things were looking up).

These so called "muslims" in india arguing probably dont know anything about Islam! By the looks of it they certainly dont because they dont know Khan is not an islamic name!!

Genghis Khan was given the title Khan because he was the ruler. If you read about him when that title was given to him he wasnt a muslim!!

Khan can be used as a title, or it could mean you belong to a certain cast or belong to a high end family which ruled a certain area etc!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roy_Khan if it was a muslim name does that mean this singer is a muslim!!

I have said it before muslim is someone who prays to God, its not neccessary that if a person is named Muhammad or Ali that he is a muslim!

You ought to change the title to "A few nutcases outraged by a dog named Khan"
