Lebanon Border Clash - 5 Killed

Lebanon Border Clash - 5 killed Aug 03, 2010
What appears to have happened is that Israeli soldiers cross over a border fence and then go gardening either within the buffer zone, or in Lebanon proper - trimming bushes (according to Haaretz) or cutting down trees (according to Lebanese Army).

The 'bushes' according to the Israeli army straddled the border:
Eizenkot told Israeli media that "a routine operation was carried out during the afternoon near Misgav Am – an operation whose purpose was to trim some bushes near the border, in our [Israeli] territory. It was on both sides of the border but still within [Israeli] territory. Officers oversaw the operation from a permanent position. Sniper fire was directed at the officers, and two of them were wounded as a result."

(Later confirmed one died)

whereas
The Lebanese army says Israeli soldiers crossed the border to uproot a tree which was blocking their view near the Lebanese village of Adaysseh.

Lebanese Army says it fired warning shots and the Israelis fired back - using helicopters and missiles. Israelis say the Lebanese Army snipers hit two soldiers - killing one officer. Israelis kill 3 Lebanese soldiers and a journalist in the missile attack.

Israel blames Lebanon. Lebanon blames Israel.

So, Israel kills 4, including one civilian, Lebanon kills one soldier.

Some in Israel are bizarely blaming Hezbollah for this - when the Lebanese Army was the one doing the fighting. I'm sure the loons will join in this conspiracy theory soon enough.

Things are hotting up on that border - and not necessarily because of the heat wave!

Rocket destoys hospital

The child hydrotherapy rehabilitation center adjoining Sderot’s Sapir Academic College provides therapy and workshops for special needs children who live in the western Negev and is used by children from the entire country.

On Saturday night, an upgraded Kassam rocket scored a direct hit on the ceiling of the center.

The world is outraged *cough*.

We are approaching a total of 400 rocket attacks launched from Gaza since the cease-fire that halted Israel’s Operation Cast Lead in Gaza in January 2009.

Some cease fire!

Umm - what has either of those stories got to do with a border clash between the armies of Israel and Lebanon?

Or are you just being ironic and engaging in a bit of 'what about-ery' for fun?

So Israel kills 4, Lebanon kills 1 (over a tree, of all things!) - and resident fanbois talks about rockets from Gaza?? Am I missing something? Perhaps you can also inform us of the body counts over the same period and the numbers of missiles etc Israel fired into Gaza? Or don't you count the victims of Israeli attacks?

Israel coordinated their maintenance (which was located between the blue line and the Israel security fence, so on Israeli territory) with UNIFIL and UNIFIL gave clearance and monitored it.

But certain media outlets were already foaming and screaming hell and fire about the Zionist aggressor.

Considering this was a premeditated ambush of Israeli soldiers on Israeli soil, Israel showed a lot of constraint.

As a coincidence quite some reporters and photographers were on location when it all happened.

You can never blame Israel for not being consistent, always bring a gun to a fist fight, only someday someone will turn up with a cannon instead

Indeed. Israel kills 4 including a civilian, Lebanon kills one officer - and the explanation is the 'off the shelf' - it was not our fault, it was them Arabs.

It is also interesting to contrast the different descriptions/spin being given to the tree in question - read the IDF side and you get the impression they were doing a bit of gardening on some 'bushes' - when footage is shown, the news organisations, Lebanese army etc all say the Israelis were uprooting a tree.

Now the spin is that it was a 'pre-meditated ambush'. But you can almost feel the frustration on the fanbois part that they can't quite link this clash between the two armies with Hezbollah (but they are trying desperately - imagining that perhaps the guy who pulled the trigger once saw a Nasrallah speech and is a secret Hezbo AND his uncle has a beard - or some other weird fanbois fantasy)

As opposed to the spin from the Lebanese that the Israelis had crossed over into Lebanon ?

read the IDF side and you get the impression they were doing a bit of gardening on some 'bushes' - when footage is shown, the news organisations, Lebanese army etc all say the Israelis were uprooting a tree.

Wow. Uhm, that's fascinating.

You wouldn't be focusing so much on uprooting or trimming a bush because the story turned out to be a propaganda failure, now would you ?

Indeed. Israel kills 4 including a civilian, Lebanon kills one officer - and the explanation is the 'off the shelf' - it was not our fault, it was them Arabs.

Whose fault would it be ?

I can't quite understand your brilliant logic.

Oh, let me guess. It's Israel's fault. The Israelis were provoking the Lebanese with their tree pruning or something. Quick, make an excuse !

Didn't see that coming.

Now the spin is that it was a 'pre-meditated ambush'.

Again, the spin that you're covering up was that the Israelis had entered Lebanese territory. It turned out the Israelis were well within their own country, but this was not initially reported.

As for being an ambush, Lebanese snipers did successfully fire at Israeli soldiers from over 700 meters. That sounds like some type of ambush to me.

Was it a tree or not?

As for which side to believe - I thought I was being pretty even in reporting what each side was saying.

As for spinning it as an 'ambush' - I'm not surprised that you've obviously taken sides in this and believe the Gospel according to the IDF. ;)

Exactly according to the book. Was actually waiting for the dispropotional argument. Lebanese soldiers (in the company of the press and UNIFIL  ) shoot at Israeli army officers well in Israeli territory and when Israeli shoots back its unfair. :?

Never said it was unfair but the response as always was way too heavy handed.

Check out what the worthless UN has to say about it:

http://www.un.org/apps/news/infocusRel.asp?infocusID=70&Body=Palestin&Body1=

ne rien, let alone an explanation about why those UNIFIL soldiers were standing next to the LAF soldiers shooting at Israel.

As quite when UN officials were taken hostage in Sri Lanka.

Lebanon must learn a lesson,Israel will teach!

After Tuesday's border clash, Israel will continue to ignore UNIFIL and the Lebanese army.
Those bastards, the Lebanese, changed the rules. Scandalous. Word is, they have a brigade commander who's determined to protect his country's sovereignty. Scandalous.!!!!!!!!!
