It is spiralling out of control there.
It is interesting to watch the news and note that the Pakistani officials (notably the US ambassador) refer to the blasphemy laws as 'man-made laws'.
It goes to show that persecuting minorities is a thin edge of a wedge - the laws were initially targetted against the minority Ahmadiyya group and made it illegal for them to 'pretend' to be Muslims - they are not allowed (by the law) to call mosques 'mosques', it is a crime for them to have Quranic inscriptions on mosques and tombstones, call the Azan and ridiculously to even greet each other with 'Assalamo Alaikum'. These are crimes punishable by imprisonment - and they are enforced!
What was (presumably) unintended was that the same mad Mullahs who got their way, then turned their attention to Shia - and there is a growing call for them to be declared non-Muslim too. The same characters that were in anti-Ahmadi groups such as 'Sepahi Nabuwat' (sp?) are now part of 'Sepahi Sahaba' - asking for the same treatment of Shia as for Ahmadis.
This hatred is now spilling over to all nonMuslims.
I'm reminded of the words:
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me." Pastor Martin Niemölle
By all accounts though - the mad Mullahs are not the majority, even though they are vocal and rabble rousers, and do have the government by the goolies.
