Lawyers lauding gov assasin - Pakistan Jan 06, 2011
I'm sorry, but Pakistan is one screwed up place. There is a ridiculous death ruling against a Christian woman over a stupid cat fight with some Muslim women, then the governor who supports the woman being released gets gunned down by his bodyguard and there are lawyers throwing flower petals at him when he goes to court. 500 clerics say that no one should pray for the loss of the governor.

With all the political, military and radical Islamist problems - what is the future of Pakistan? Looks pretty bleak to me :(

It is spiralling out of control there.

It is interesting to watch the news and note that the Pakistani officials (notably the US ambassador) refer to the blasphemy laws as 'man-made laws'.

It goes to show that persecuting minorities is a thin edge of a wedge - the laws were initially targetted against the minority Ahmadiyya group and made it illegal for them to 'pretend' to be Muslims - they are not allowed (by the law) to call mosques 'mosques', it is a crime for them to have Quranic inscriptions on mosques and tombstones, call the Azan and ridiculously to even greet each other with 'Assalamo Alaikum'. These are crimes punishable by imprisonment - and they are enforced!

What was (presumably) unintended was that the same mad Mullahs who got their way, then turned their attention to Shia - and there is a growing call for them to be declared non-Muslim too. The same characters that were in anti-Ahmadi groups such as 'Sepahi Nabuwat' (sp?) are now part of 'Sepahi Sahaba' - asking for the same treatment of Shia as for Ahmadis.

This hatred is now spilling over to all nonMuslims.

I'm reminded of the words:
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me." Pastor Martin Niemölle

By all accounts though - the mad Mullahs are not the majority, even though they are vocal and rabble rousers, and do have the government by the goolies.

Cheers,
Shafique

They aren't the majority, but I'd say 500 is a lot.

I'd agree - the supporters include lawyers as you say, and indeed the assassin was the governer's bodyguard.

The Mullahs have stirred up a lot of hatred and the frankestein monster is growing out of control.

I am really naive, because I thought for sure that woman would be released eventually. How could she be put to death, surely the legal system would protect her... A governor stands up for her and now look at how things are snowballing! All of this comes from some catty women in a field... who would have thought!

Sadly the ironic thing is that you can't even call it blashphemy. You've got to be of the same religion to blaspheme(?) against it.

What I'd say is that In a war thorn country where western world meddles with the politics of muslims, a governor should have been extra careful while talking in public as everyone is tender and sensetive. It’s obvious that muslims either extreme or not, are emotinally run down against foreign oppression/occupation or worldwide PR campaigns to belittle islam , under these conditions it is likely that some people will take matters in hand and use every oppurtunity to express themselves in any style they like (unfortunatly)..

Plus pakistans is a federal republic with constituation, legal system based on English common law with provisions to accommodate Pakistan's status as an Islamic state; accepts compulsory ICJ jurisdiction with reservations...

It's so strange that the governor acts as if he doesn’t know the codes of his legal system..

Do you know anything about Pakistan berrin ? Countries and people which do not accept that they have a problem can never find a solution. The pass the blame game is rampant in Pakistan, until and unless it stops playing that and starts acknowledging its has problems there can be no solution.

Its is a HUGE disgrace for a country that spends billions on nuclear weapons when its large amount of it population does not recieve the basic ammenities of human life and lives below or close to the poverty line. For heavens sakes major cities don't even get a regular supply of power or water and the gaul to call its self a nuclear power !

Now what has this got to do with the topic in discussion...

-- Fri Jan 07, 2011 12:09 am --

Conflict and poverty are the closest of relatives. Look at Ethiopia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan,
Cambodia, Somalia, Nigeria, Haiti,Pakistan, Mozambique, Mali, India or Angola. They are all in
conflict-either within or with their neighbours-and they are all poor. Peace is an essential
prerequisite to prosperity. Without peace there can't be any poverty alleviation.

Do you know why they have to have a conflict one or another way?
Couse making peace is easier than having a conflict...
