I suppose this is Israel's way of saying we are not interested in two states or the new peace negotiations.
Has been widely condemned by the quartet but unfortunately I don't think it changes the US veto stance at all. There are simply no repercussions for Israel.

Israel wants peace, a stolen piece of land that is and ofcourse Israel is beyond reproach the US just cannot get enough of the stink from Israels butt and sinks its nose deeper in it everyday.

And then loons wonder why we hate the "Jewish state" that was established BASED on this concept of stealing others land, while punishing them, putting them in one jail, and humilate them continuously for 60 years, yet they even go further with their disrespect to humanity by accusing Palesineans for not doing enough to approach peace.

Steal+Kill+Humilate = Israel, a Jewish based state, as per God's will - - Bravo.

A wake-up call for nations opposed to Palestine’s full UN membership

Ramallah: Defying the international community and seeking to destroy the two-state option, Israel yesterday approved a plan for 1,100 new illegal homes in the Occupied East Jerusalem colony neighbourhood of Gilo.

The plan was condemned by the Palestinians who accused Israel of rejecting a Quartet proposal for new peace talks. “With this, Israel is responding to the Quartet’s statement with 1,100 ‘no’s,” Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said.

The international peacemaking Quartet on Friday called on Israel and the Palestinians to return to the negotiating table within a month, with the goal of reaching a deal within a year. “We believe that Israel has today responded to the Quartet statement, which called for a halt to unilateral actions by both sides,” he said, adding Israel was effectively saying: “We have chosen settlements colonies instead of peace.”

Erekat said the approval should be a wake-up call for countries that have opposed the Palestinian bid for UN membership. “The only way to peace and the implementation of the two-state solution is to support the Palestinian attempt to obtain full membership” at the UN, he said.

The announcement of the colony expansion in Gilo is further proof that Israel is not serious about resuming peace talks, an official said. “Unless the Quartet proposal meets the Palestinian demand of halting colony construction, it is impossible to restart negotiations,” Wasel Abu Yousuf, a member of the PLO Executive Committee told Gulf News.

Meanwhile, Nigeria, which holds a rotating seat on the UN Security Council, officially said it would vote in favour of a Palestinian state, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Colombia is believed to be voting against, while other rotating countries Gabon and Bosnia have not made their position clear. So far only the US has made clear it would veto the statehood bid, while France and China have been giving conflicting statements.

Israel's decision to build 1,100 settlement homes on West Bank land is counter-productive to reviving peace talks with the Palestinians, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Tuesday.

The decision appears to make it even less likely that the two sides will answer a call on Friday by the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States, collectively know as the Quartet, to resume peace talks within a month.

"We believe that this morning's announcement by the government of Israel approving the construction of (1,100) housing units in Occupied East Jerusalem is counter-productive to our efforts to resume direct negotiations between the parties," Clinton told reporters at a news conference.

"As you know, we have long urged both sides to avoid any kind of action which could undermine trust, including, and perhaps most particularly, in Occupied Jerusalem, any action that could be viewed as provocative by either side," she added.

Is that all Hillary has to say about it? Apparently she can't step up and say that this is an action by Israel which clearly is meant to provoke. Looks to me like an "up yours" to the US. The US is trying to convince the countries that have a vote NOT to vote for Palestine statehood so that the US doesn't have to use the veto and look like the "bad guy" (or should I say Israel's puppet??), but would rather let the countries who they can persuade to vote against statehood look like the bad guys. For those countries who are undecided, I think this should help them come to the realization that there is nothing sincere about Israel.

For those countries who had any doubts I think Israel's latest move is pretty clear - peace is not on Israel's agenda. Israel has two missions: deny Palestine statehood and embarrass the US even further should the US either support this latest movement or remain silent on it. Oh, I might add: show the world who really is in charge!!!

Aside from the usual arrogance of Israel, I'm astonished with the dramatic failure of diplomacy, choosing to announce more of stealing/occupation, in the "PERECT" time!

Apart from the "up yours" message this sends I think this confirms that Israel really has no desire to hand back any of the occupied territories and agree a two state solution along the pre-1967 borders. They will keep building and building so that if they are ever forced to the negotiation table they will just say "well we can't uproot all these people" so lets redefine borders. I think the total population at these settlements is now 500,000.

It also goes to show that Abbas was correct in his speech that the core issue is the illegal colonisation of Occupied land.

I didn't think so.

I understand that you are frustrated about this Shaf vs me thing and by all means you can keep harping on about it but people do want to talk about other things as well. Common BM lets just stay on one thread and let other people use the forum. What do you say?
