Foottie Is War

Foottie is war Jun 15, 2010
After the football war between Honduras and El Salvador, another example that foottie can literally mean war:

Somali militants have threatened football fans they will be publicly flogged - or worse - if they are caught watching the World Cup on TV.

Gangs of Islamists are reported to be patrolling the areas they control looking for people watching games.

Dedicated fans are watching matches in secret, or in the few areas controlled by government forces.

On Saturday militants killed two people as they attacked a house where people were watching a game.

Militant group Hizbul-Islam also arrested 10 others at the house north-east of the capital Mogadishu where fans were watching the game between Argentina and Nigeria.

In the Juba Valley rebel militias went further, saying young men should not watch football - even in the privacy of their own homes - because it would "distract them from pursuing holy jihad."

It's looking bad (or good, depending on your perspective). Islamic militants seem to be in control of the streets of Somalia:

You should see the USA vs England thread - and there'll be no doubt that footie is war! ;)

My bet is on the footie fans winning the day in Somalia. Those guys know how to extract millions from shipping companies (and can teach the Israelis a thing or two about taking over ships on the high seas), so I'm sure they'll be able to figure out how to watch the footie on the 70inch tvs they've bought. ;) :)

(BTW - nice to see the fanboi appreciation society get back together again ;) )

I thought you might find that amusing (or not) - but it was a small reference to Somalis being more proficient pirates than Israel. ;)

I still think the footie fans will win though. These extremists are only a small step removed from the Saudis who use the same logic to ban Cinemas - but in the end it's futile to try and ban TV generally and footie specifically.

Somehow I am glad Holland lost the final. Their violent play didn't deserve a win. This, however takes footie violence to a whole other level:

A Somali Islamist militant movement on Monday claimed responsibility for a trio of bombings that killed at least 74 people Sunday at two venues in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, where crowds had gathered to watch the World Cup final.

Rage said young suicide bombers carried out the attacks but did not specify their nationalities. "May Allah accept these martyrs who carried out the blessed operation and exploded themselves in the middle of the infidels," he said.

Huh?

You're losing it big time FD - the Al Shabbab terrorists targeted restaurants in Kampala and gave specific reasons for their terrorist attacks - nothing to do with football, but rather the presence of AU forces in Somalia.

Your loon anti-Islam zeal is really clouding your judgement these days.

Now, this story of violence was about the football:

Police: Family killed dad for watching World Cup instead of gospel show

JOHANNESBURG (AP) - Police say a South African man who wanted to watch a World Cup match instead of a religious program was beaten to death by his family in the northeastern part of the country.

According to Ugandan authorities, the bombers specifically set out to attack World Cup crowds.

Given al-Qaeda's previous threat against the World Cup and al-Shabaab's view that kickball is haraam (including the deaths of at least five Somalians for watching the World Cup), why the denial that the chosen targets were not selected because they were watching/celebrating the World Cup ?

Lieutenant-Colonel Felix Kulaigye, a Ugandan army spokesman, said: "Al-Shabab is the reason why we should stay in Somalia. We have to pacify Somalia."

Kayihura that the attacks, which took place amid large crowds at the two locations, could have been carried out by suicide bombers.

"These bombs were definitely targeting World Cup crowds," he said.

Epic failure of understanding again on the loons - blinded by their Islamophobia.

No one denies that the Shabab terrorists were targetting people gathered to watch the Footie. The big thing point is that the reason they attacked Kampala was to make good on their threat that they will attack Ugandan targets because of Ugandan troops in Somalia - not because they hate football. Sigh.

The poor South African grandfather killed by his relatives who wanted to watch the Christian tv show, was killed over his desire to watch football. The attacks in Somalia in the first post also were specifically about the football. The Kampala terrorist attacks weren't.

Actually, the epic failure in reading comprehension was on your part.

I said that the decision to target kickball fans was motivated by al-Shabaab's views regarding kickball.

The Islamic terrorists were never in any rush to bomb Uganda - they could have bombed the country before or after the World Cup and, even if they wanted to do it now, they could have chosen other targets.

Instead, they seemed to have exclusively targeted people who were gathered watching the tournament - it's not like they couldn't have blown up a market or bus if they wanted publicity and mass casualties.

Epic Fail - your loon fantasies are writing checks the evidence can't back up! (See, I even spelt cheque wrong, just for you. ;) )

So which news organisation said the bombs were because of the terrorists hatred of football then?

Once again, an epic failure in reading comprehension.

I didn't say that Ugandans wouldn't have been bombed - if the World Cup wasn't going on, then marketplaces would have been blown up.

I said the decision to blow up kickball fans rather than people riding a bus was probably due to al-Shabaab's view of the corrupting influences of kickball (Koran 5:33).

Might as well hit two birds with one stone, sort of thing.

All I did was ask whether any news source agrees with your speculation.

I guess the answer is no.

You'll have to ask Ugandan authorities why they believe al-Shabaab specifically set out to attack World Cup fans.

After all, one target (if not both) included a lot of expatriates (from Europe and elsewhere) who were watching the World Cup.

Many - if not most - of those killed and injured were foreign nationals, with both venues popular destinations for expatriates living in Kampala.

So, that's still a 'no, I can't find ANY reference that the attacks were also because they hated footy'.

Thanks for confirming (if you read the reports, you'll see that reasons ARE given for attacking Kampala and the targets chosen - and it 'hatred for football' is not given as a reason)

Uh-huh.

What were these reasons given by the article for why al-Shabaab specifically attacked kickball fans, including targets where there would be many foreigners at ?

You want me to do your homework AGAIN? Now what did I tell you last time you asked me to do this?

It's a simple task - just post the reasons given in articles etc for targeting Uganda and show that ANYONE agrees with your speculation that it is because they also hated football.

Once again, snowflake, I didn't say Uganda was attacked over kickball.

You have to be pretty dense to still claim I said this.

What I did say, is that Uganda was attacked, and the terrorists felt it would be a better idea to blow up kickball fans, rather, than say, people on buses or markets or hundreds of other locations.

I know what you've said, and I've kept saying that you're the only one with this fanciful idea.

When you find anyone who agrees with you, let me know. Sometimes everyone else is right, and you're the one who is wrong!
