The Palestinian Authority's Education Ministry approved the use of a history textbook that offers the central narratives of both Palestinians and the Zionist movement, marking the first time that the accepted Israeli position is being presented to schoolchildren in the West Bank.

The textbook, which has been banned from use by the Israeli Education Ministry, is the result of a joint Israeli-Palestinian-Swedish collaboration to promote coexistence through education. It will be taught in two high schools near Jericho, the Palestinian Education Ministry said.

Next week, the Education Ministry is scheduled to summon the principal of a Sderot area high school for "clarification" after he had permitted the use of the textbook by students in a special supplementary educational course.

Aharon Rothstein, the head of the Sha'ar Hanegev high school, may be reprimanded for allowing students to reference a textbook entitled "Learning the Historical Narrative of the Other," a project initiated by Prof. Dan Bar-On of Ben-Gurion University and Prof. Sami Adwan of Bethlehem University.

"Unfortunately, the Palestinians are further along than the Israeli Education Ministry when it comes to acknowledging the other side of the conflict," said an official involved in administering the textbook in the Sha'ar Hanegev school. "While [the Palestinians] approved the project, here they are summoning the principal for clarifications. This is a highly embarrassing situation."

Israeli officials said that the Education Ministry's order to discontinue the use of the textbook was issued without any official vetting of the book's contents or the supplementary coursework. It was only after the project garnered media attention that the ministry's pedagogic secretariat, Zvi Zameret, asked to see the textbook.

The final edition of the textbook, which was published last year, offers both the Israeli and Palestinian historical narratives of the Middle East conflict while also allowing for students to note their thoughts on the material. The book covers the early stages of the Zionist movement all the way through to the past decade. It has been published in English, Arabic, and Hebrew.

Last August, a delegation of Swedish mayors visited Israel and the Palestinian territories. During the visit, the delegation signed a cooperation agreement with the Sha'ar Hanegev regional council and the Palestinian Authority's Education Ministry. As part of the project, a small group of students from each area would learn from the textbook while the teachers would exchange information and instruction methods.

Later this month, a delegation of Israeli and Palestinian teachers is scheduled to take part in a workshop in Sweden as part of the first stage of the joint project. In the second stage, 11th and 12th grade students from Israel, the PA, and Sweden are to meet in joint sessions to discuss the textbook.

"Ramallah approved the project only after PA officials read the textbook, while in Israel the book was banned even though officials in Jerusalem did not even check its contents," said one official. "From the Palestinian standpoint, this is a breakthrough because they are ready to teach the Israeli narrative. On the other hand, in Israel they are hunkering down in old positions."

We'll see:

PA denies backing textbook with Zionist narrative

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A Palestinian Authority Ministry of Education official denied on Monday approving a textbook which teaches schoolchildren the Zionist and Palestinian narrative.

A member of the PA ministry's curriculum committee Thwarwat Zaid rebuffed a report in Israeli daily Haaretz that the textbook had been approved and said the committee neither knew of the book nor read it.

"Learning the Historical Narrative of the Other" was the joint initiative of a Swedish group and Israeli and Palestinian professors to promote coexistence, and was banned by the Israeli Education Ministry in September, the daily wrote on Monday, adding that the textbook would be taught in two schools in Jericho.

Bethlehem University professor Sami Edwan, who participated in the writing of the textbook, said it compiled narratives from both Palestinians and Israelis from 1900 until 2000.

He said the aim of the textbook was to show the contrasting narratives and an attempt at documenting them rather than refuting them.

The book has been translated into English, Arabic and Hebrew.

An Israeli official quoted in Haaretz said "Ramallah approved the project only after PA officials read the textbook, while in Israel the book was banned even though officials in Jerusalem did not even check its contents. From the Palestinian standpoint, this is a breakthrough because they are ready to teach the Israeli narrative. On the other hand, in Israel they are hunkering down in old positions."

A school principal from Sderot in southern Israel was summoned by Israel's Education Ministry for permitting students to study the book, the newspaper said. Israeli officials quoted in the report described the situation as "highly embarrassing," and said the book was banned before anyone from the ministry had actually read it.

The education received by Palestinian school children is a controversial subject. In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Israel's Ambassador to the US Michael Oren explained "We have a great number of problems with the things that Palestinians do. They teach their kids in their textbooks not to recognize our right to exist."

Well, on this one I agree with loon blogger Elder of Zyon:

PA throws away huge PR victory. Because they hate Israel that much.

Ha'aretz had an exclusive story today that looked very embarrassing to Israel:

Israel bans a textbook, Haaretz reports that the Palestinians are more open than the Israelis - and we have this report from Maan. It was indeed a huge PR victory.

Perhaps the PA hate Israel as much as the Israelis hate the Palestinians?

But let's see whether this PA official or the Israeli official quoted in Haaretz is right - I mean, his point was devastating (not just 'embarrassing') to fanbois:

"Ramallah approved the project only after PA officials read the textbook, while in Israel the book was banned even though officials in Jerusalem did not even check its contents," said one official. "From the Palestinian standpoint, this is a breakthrough because they are ready to teach the Israeli narrative. On the other hand, in Israel they are hunkering down in old positions."

Shame on the PA IF they too have followed Israel and banned the book without reading.

Uh, yeah sure.

Pal-Arab incitement against Israel and Jews is so common that it's a dog bites man story.

I don't need to remind you about Hamas' recent escapades in Gaza prohibiting the teaching of the holocaust.

So, you are now arguing that the Israelis are just copying Hamas? Classic what-aboutery argument.

I note you haven't condemned (or even commented) on Israel censoring school books and indoctrinating children. Compare and contrast with the positive comments given when the report of the PA allowing the book Israel banned and my condemnation if they banned it without reading (like the Israelis have done).

I'll take your word for it if you read loon blogs then the stories about Pal incitement are common. Loonville's view of the world seems to be quite bizarre.

Anyway, you're just living up to the expectations people have about loon hypocrisy. Bravo.
