Another dubious lawsuit Nov 02, 2010
A respectable (right-wing) Dutch weekly called Greta Duisenberg (an anti-Israel activist) an antisemite. Greta is now suing the weekly.

http://atthebackofthehill.blogspot.com/2010/11/gretta-duisenberg-hollands-foremost.html

Amsterdam - Gretta Duisenberg on Monday files a complaint with the Amsterdam Police against weekly magazine Elsevier and columnist Afshin Ellian for 'insult and libel'. In both a recent article in the weekly and in the Elsevier-weblog of the columnist she was called an anti-Semite. This per the pro-Palestine group 'Stop the Occupation, of which Duisenberg is the chairman

Duisenberg wishes that there should be an end to the slinging of mud in her direction.

Gretta Duisenberg often seemed to take delight in offending and insulting. Her notorious statement that she wished six million signatures for her petition against the occupation was widely seen as a sneering reference to the holocaust.

Notice also that she claims jews in amsterdam are annexing all the restaurants and jews dominate the Dutch government. Apart from my opinion that she is indeed anti-semitic, it is another vile attempt from the left to limit FoS, a trend that seems to get real momentum.

I don't think you can call a Jew anti-semite I assuming she is jewish with a last name like Duisenberg. You could apply the tired old cliche title of self hating jew though. The blog link is obviously baised so I'm not going take any of the alegations seriously, truthfull or fact.

Dutch translates pretty well even on google and looked around could find nothing of the sort as claimed. Whatever little I've read I would agree with.

Pro Israel people like these and Israel itself instantly lable any criticism of Israel as anti semitic, and have cried wolf one time too many and people are getting tired of it. When one actualy does come around, no one will pay attention.

Being called an anti-Semite is quite serious - actually being one is even more so. (Just ask Mel Gibson!)

However, in the snippet above is the opponent of Israel's crimes really being called an Anti-Semite for saying she wished to have 6 million signatures on a petition against Israel's occupation?

Why would a Jewish person not be able to make a veiled reference to the suffering of the Holocaust to draw attention to the suffering being caused by Israel today. Surely FOS extends to her being able to state her views without a silly person accusing her of hating Jews (her own kind).

Even young event horizon agrees that FOS has its limits (but I would guess would also follow the same formula: support of people Israel oppresses = bad; blind support of Israel = virtuous).

"Cry Wolf" is indeed appropriate DD.

Where have I said that freedom of speech has its limits? Perhaps you're thinking of the thread where employers lost their jobs over their comments and misconstrued what I said into thinking that's an infringement on free speech - even though I was clear that it wasn't.

People are branded racists all the time - just ask our resident ('rednecks are people with low iqs') loon on his dropping the race card every chance he gets when he's losing an argument.

No one is sued when Jesse 'hymietown' Jackson calls others racists.

But maybe she thinks she has a case for libel. I just think her case should be thrown out of court, that's all.

"Cry Wolf" is indeed appropriate DD.

The only person crying wolf would be the person filing the lawsuit.

Umm - DDS, you may want to check out her bio. (Hint, she's not Jewish)

Anyway at least you stated that this was just an assumption based on her name - but a quick look at what she has actually done shows what her real 'crime' is - being anti the Israeli occupation.

Back in 2003 in the NYT she said:
'I'm not an anti-Semite,'' she said. ''If I were that, I'd be against Jews in general and I'm not.

''I'm against Sharon and what his government is doing,'' she added, referring to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon of Israel. ''That's all.''

Ms. Duisenberg's opinions have provoked strong reactions in some quarters: a Dutch television personality draped an Israeli flag the size of a football field over the couple's home.

Earlier this week, Ms. Duisenberg generated controversy again when a few comments she made were perceived by some as supporting Palestinian suicide bombers, a charge she vigorously denied.

Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende called Ms. Duisenberg's comments a completely false signal, coming as they did so quickly after another suicide bombing attack.

But in her meeting with Mr. Arafat today, Ms. Duisenberg said she was the first to broach the subject of suicide bombers.

''I asked him,'' she said, ''how he felt about about suicide bombings. I condemned them and so did he.''

''We want peace for both countries,'' she added, referring to Israel and a possible future Palestinian state.

So the accusations of her being an anti-Semite date back to when Israeli spin was more widely believed - and even then the Dutch prosecutors office threw out an attempted case of anti-semitism that was brought against her.
