Affirmative action may be overturned? Oct 17, 2012
I was briefly reading the news saying the supreme court in the US is reviewing the legality of affirmative action at schools.

For those who don't know, affirmative action is where students are given preferential treatment in admissions based on their race.

A student applying to a program or university of race X with a grade point average of 2.5 will be considered in the application process as if they have a gpa of 3.5. That means a student of race Y with with a grade point average less than 3.5 (say 3.4) will not be selected for admission if they have to compete with the 2.5 gpa student of race X.

As a result, the superior student is discriminated against based only on the color of their skin for the student with lower grades but a different race. Understandably, affirmative action is not terribly popular with people affected by its racism. If AA is ruled against, this could go a long way to judging students based purely on academic performance; which is pretty much the only metric of success in school to begin with.
