Stealing - i mean borrowing a wireless connection? Sep 27, 2006
Hi,

If I'm using someone's wireless DSL connection, is there any way for him/her to know exactly where I am?

Thanks.

Yes, if he has a tracer with GPS (I have one that is GPS capable but too tight arse to fork out for the GPS dongle) then he can find you relatively easily.

Now, proving it wasn't an accident.... that's altogether a different story.

Well its only a temporary 'accident'. I hope.
And i'm sure he doenst have all that equipment if he doesn't bother to put a network key on his router.
Was just thinking if etisalat came along if he complained...

Why are you stealing someone's wireless in the first place? Get your own!

As mentioned, you can be traced, you can get software for a PDA with 802.11 which will do this, and act as a little compass to whatever node you select.

It's pretty handy, especially when trying to locate open access points.

The app is called WifiFoFum

I said its temporary. And i only use it if i really need to check mails urgently - like for 5-10 mins max. Just used it twice so far.

Etisalat suck. I applied about 4 weeks ago or so and they said they dont have enough lines or ports or something on their exchange.
Been following up with them but still no word.

Its strange tho - the person who used to stay there had DSL. So i told them the wires/connection should still be there, u just need to hook me up. They said no, that port would have gone to someone else.

...something like that.

Trust me, i want my own dsl asap!! :)

As long as you don't download gigs, I'm sure you'll be fine. If they have an open key you might be surprised you're not the only one using it.

Again if there are no ports on the DSLAM in the exchange then they will allocate a vacant one as quickly as it becomes available. Rather have the port working for them then sitting in a vacant apartment.
