Microsoft Updates :x Apr 23, 2007
Made the mistake of letting microsoft updates install on my laptop. Afterwards it wouldnt reboot. Had to do a clean install using my system recovery disk, but this means Ive lost a lot of data from that Laptop. Luckily most of it is backed up on DVD back in UK.

Will never allow MS updates again!! :x

You have to pick and make sure the one's you're installing. Always set your automatic update settings to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them"

After the updates get downloaded, you get two options. Install them or do a custom install. Choose Custom install and pick the ones you need.

Critical updates I suggest you must install. The Recommended updates, you need not but you should read through them and see which ones maybe relevant.

At work, I use a WSUS Server to send patches to all my computers and only the ones I pick. But of course this is a work solution. For home, do the above and you'll be fine.

FYI, do not install the GDI+ Update

Here's how I build my machines. (if building from scratch and not using Ghost)

1. Install OS (XP Pro for example) and login in as administrator after that
2. Install Drivers
3. Connect it to the network and change teh Automatic Updates setting to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them"
4. It will download the first two patches which is a must, install those and reboot
5. Then leave your machine for about 30 mins until it downloads the remaining 74 updates.
6. You can then do a custom install and pick the critical updates and more if you choose
7. Install anti-virus software
and so on....

First of, how can you have a Windows 2003 Server and not have a copy of the Windows 2003 Server CD??

Second, you can download a trial version of IIS always. Just do a google search

Third, have you used Limewire? Try looking for IIS on that.. or like Not_Sure said, copy someone's CD or have them upload it to www.drivehq.com which allows 1GB free space.

well imo installing windows looks like this

1. install windows xp
2. install sp2 if your win install cd does not include it
3. install antivirus + frirewall
4. go online download updates
5. everything else after this

goin online without the antivirus/firewall installed is a suicide
