You might soon be able to recharge your smartphone in just 30 seconds. StoreDot a two-year-old startup has now demonstrated that when it takes regular modern-day batteries hours to get fully powered up, its new technology can achieve that in just a matter of seconds.

The company unveiled its prototype on Monday at a Microsoft-sponsored conference and showed it working on a Samsung Galaxy S4.

The company has been working on nanodots – the bio-organic nano crystal that can change the rules of mobile device capabilities. Only 2 nanometers in size, these are multifunctional biological semiconductors that can be applied on the development of not just technological solutions but also healthcare.

According to the company, its technology for energy storage can be applied in batteries for mobile devices, providing a sustainable solution that can replace lithium-ion batteries. Due to the size of StoreDot nanodots, the electrode capacitance is increased, resulting in next-generation batteries and super-capacitors that can be fully charged in minutes rather than hours.

The challenge for the company is to now reduce the size of its prototype form - its currently bulky laptop sized device - to one that can fit into modern day slim designs. According to the company, commercial production of the new technology may not become a reality until about 2016.
