Dubaisky

I was playing around with my wireless network antenna hobby yesterday and I picked up several beacons with the ESSID Dubaisky with open access points. I tried to log on to find more but there was no DHCP server and I ran out of time fiddling around.

Does anyone know what this is?

Bear in mind I can pick up access points in about a 10 kilometre radius, so it could be something in Internet City.

If I'm not mistaken Etisalat is planning for wireless services around Dubai, an add on to their current wifi spots, so essentially the whole city will have wireless access.

I believe this is called DubaiSky, maybe the initial beacons are what you are seeing.

Not sure though.

if you can connect to the wireless and its tells you it cannot get an IP, it probably means one of the 3

1. no more available IP address to give you
2. The Mac address of your wireless is restricted and the dhcp server will not lease you an ip address
3. The wireless device is up but it is not connected/ lost connectivity to the dhcp server

take care

I imagine there is no DHCP server allocating IP addresses. It is not refusing the connection, it just cannot allocate an IP address.

If someone has set up a wireless network which requires a key, is there anyway of finding this out?

I ask this because:
1- I want to make sure nobody can use my net connection.
2- in case i need to use someones.

Yes WEP can easily be cracked but it requires the use of 2 computers. You can do it with one, but it takes a lot longer.

Note, I have never cracked WEP myself as I have never had the need to.

Are we allowed to talk about such stuff here, or does it constitute illegal stuff like hacking etc? Can we talk about that here?

Problem is right now I dont have DSL anymore..waiting for Etisalat to come and they say they need a few weeks coz of not having enough ports in their exchange etc.
I detected a wireless network in the building, but needs a key. :(

I have 3 or 4 laptops I could use. :)
But nah, dont think i would coz of the risk & its unethical.
But knowing 'how' is always good! :)
