Is anyone here interested in the LHC?

Here is a small intro for those who don't know anything about it:

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons with very high kinetic energy. Its main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the current theories in particle physics.

Although the Standard Model of particle physics predicts that LHC energies are far too low to create black holes, some extensions of the Standard Model posit the existence of extra spatial dimensions, in which it would be possible to create micro black holes at the LHC at a rate on the order of one per second.

The first proton beams were injected into the LHC on the 10th September 2008. This critical step in commissioning the LHC went smoothly and over the next few months the LHC team will move towards the first particle collisions.

The much talked about Big Bang theory...

I don't know about the current experiments they are doing now and it would be interesting to know more about this....

I think the LHC is awesome. I think it's great that mankind can come together and build something like this to try and answer such far out questions as 'what happened in the first few milliseconds after the Big Bang'.

Plus we can get closer to proving or disproving String Theory. Theoretical pondering is a fantastic thing but it goes hand in hand with being able to experiment in the real world. The LHC will allow us to solidify (or destroy) some theory with hard physical evidence.

As you mentioned, they haven't actually collided any protons yet. Unfortunately I read the other day that a Helium leak will put the LHC out of action for a few months, so the first collisions may not be until next year.

Yes indeed there will be a delay.
But I mentioned that there where no proton collision.. just to say that it is
not yet proved experimentally that those collisions are safe at such speeds.

Somehow I feel that the beauty of this world is in it's mystery... in not really knowing how it works, just guessing and seeking the truth.
Humanity's technical advantage is far ahead of it's moral...
and even if the results of LHC will be positive and we will learn a lot of new stuff about matter will it be beneficial for us? Wouldn't it be like a cheat in a computer game after which one loses all the interest in playing it? Or would it be the next level that is even more interesting and exciting? :)

Definitely more like the next level than cheating.

The LHC is not an easy option for answers. It will take years and years to get just a little bit more information about our universe.

They said today that it is looking like a 6 month delay. But that is not too bad because they said it is probably a 10 year program.
