36 hours in Dubai... Aug 22, 2007
Hi guys,

After some information and advice from those that have been or live in Dubai!!

I'm currently in India, and have an approx 36 hour stay in Dubai this coming weekend from Friday evening (arriving at the airport) and departing Sunday afternoon back to the Uk.

I'll be staying in Emirates towers, and i'm looking to visit a few of the Malls and the Gold and Electronic Souks.

Some advice really would be appreciated on the following....

1. I Presume the Malls will take cards, and presume the souks are cash only? Also are there any ATM's in the hotels, or are they out and about?

2. The above Souks - are they in walking distance from ET or is it a taxi ride?

3. I'm traveling on my own - is it safe to get about the city?

4. Have been advised not to eat in the towers, but to eat in some nearby restaurants. Anyone any advise as to any decent food nearby to the towers?

5. Any recommendations for Electronics/Gold Malls at all??

Is there anything else i might need to know at all??

Many thanks for any info!

Paul

yes dubai is pretty safe so you can get around. 36 hours? hmm id say check out the indoor skiing in Mall of Emirates which is pretty near emirates towers. it also has a range of electronic shops you can browse at. ibn battuta would also be nice but its a lil further away.

gold souq would be in naif area. its also pretty close just make sure to ask the taxi to take salik (gharhoud bridge) so that the trip would be a lil faster. theres both indoor and outdoor shops in that souq so its upto you if you can take humidity id suggest the outdoor one.

If you're younger than dirt, you're younger than Concord, sacrifice the sleep and follow this itenerary. you'll fill your 36 hours.

Thanks for the info guys!!

The most important is the bit about the money and whats is accepted where. I am under pains to take back something sparkly, however i need to know where cash/cards are accepted in general, so i know whether to visit an ATM before i go, or if i can use plastic...

Thanks again

ATMs are everywhere, credit card is accepted everywhere, even in some souks. No problems here. Must see malls: Mall of the Emirates (go for a ski), Ibn Battuta Mall (walk through all the themed areas), Burjuman (high fashion), Madinat Jumeirah (not really a 'mall' but nice to hang out in).

2. The above Souks - are they in walking distance from ET or is it a taxi ride?

Taxi ride. Even if it was walking distance, you'd probably want to take a cab anyway, unless you like being sweaty. Its only a short trip.

3. I'm traveling on my own - is it safe to get about the city?

Yes, very safe.

4. Have been advised not to eat in the towers, but to eat in some nearby restaurants. Anyone any advise as to any decent food nearby to the towers?

Not sure why you've been advise not to eat there, there are some nice places, but probably as its expensive. There are some good restaurants along Sheikh Zayed Rd (the main road that ET are on) Jumeirah (madinat jumeirah), Dubai Marina, plus local cheap eateries in Deira, Bur Dubai. Food is generally good and really depends on what you like.

5. Any recommendations for Electronics/Gold Malls at all??
Cant help you on this one.

Is there anything else i might need to know at all??
lots of sunscreen, go on the Big Bus ride (gives you good orientation on the city & you see all the main sights), Don't swim at the beach unless you like warm baths, forgive us for the bad traffic/driving.

Many thanks for any info!

95% of shops in malls accept cards and id say about 60% or more in gold souq does acccept cards also.
