Errant drivers to face new black point system from January
By Alia Al Theeb, Staff Reporter
Dubai: One person is killed every 36 hours in accidents on Dubai roads, a senior police official said yesterday.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said this number is a "dangerous indicator".
He said there will be tougher punishments for errant motorists when a new traffic system of black points comes into effect on January 1.
"The new system will register black points even in absentia offences unlike the current system which registers black points only for spot offences," Brig-adier Al Zafein said.
Currently if a motorist gets 12 black points in a year his licence is cancelled. But from next year the licence will be cancelled if a motorist gets 24 black points. However, the number of black points for specific offences will be increased.
Licence confiscation
Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, has approved a new traffic control system for Dubai which will be implemented on January 1.
Under the new system, if a motorist acquires 24 points in a year, his driving licence will be confiscated for six months and his vehicle for a month.
However, if he acquires 24 black points in one year for the second time, his driving licence will be cancelled, his vehicle confiscated for three months and he will be required to take a driving test one year after the date he acquired 24 black points.
More than 80,000 traffic offences have been reported in the first 20 days of this month.
