My family and i are moving to Dubai in october.
Do we need international driving liscence?
or is uk one ok to exchange for a temp lis while we drive rented cars and wait for our visaa to come through?

you can obtain a temporary UAE licence until your visas come through.
Very easy, just go to traffic dept with UK licence and passport, pay a few dirhams and obtain temp licence valid for six months.

If you have a UK license, you should be fine using that with a rental car until you get your residency visa, then exchange it for a full UAE license. But it doesn't hurt to get an International Driving Permit also. More here... Dubai driving licence
