Do you take your shoes off in your home? Aug 16, 2011
Growing up, I was required to take my shoes off and do so to this day. Of course, I always feel obligated to do the same when I'm at someone else's home.

I don't understand how people can walk around on the carpet of their own home with their shoes on. It's a very gross/dirty feeling for me. There are even people who sometimes will lay/sleep in their beds with their shoes on.

I would guess because of the culture, many members will also come from a similar upbringing of removing your shoes when you enter a home but I'm curious to know if my suspicion is indeed correct.

Two things I take off as soon as I enter the home because I find them very constricting: 1. shoes; and 2. well.............

I always take my shoes off and sometimes take slippers with me when I visit people. I also have a supply of slippers for guests. :D

Would never wear shoes inside the house earlier specially because as was the trend here before of wall to wall carpeting and god forbid there was even a tiny stain on the carpet !

But now since the introduction of ceramic tiling everywhere one does need to have atleast slippers on. Even in the summer teh floor is just too darn cold to be walking barefoot. So got slippers handy.

Anywasy in the subcontinental culture and even Arab it is just considered rude to be in the house with shoes on, specially if you're visiting someone.

Back in the day people have witnessed others taking of their shoes when getting into trains, busses and cars.

first thing I take off at home my shoes, and in the way to my room I take other stuff off as well. I don't like to be in outdoors cloths at home.
when being a guest, mostly I took my shoes off, but you know sometimes when you are visiting someone and you feel you better keep your shoes on! only few.

I do take my shoes off when I get home, but that's because my feet are usually killing me after a hard day at work in heels.
I wouldn't dream of asking someone to take their shoes off when coming into my house, I would just feel that is bad manners on my part.
I do live on a farm, mind you, and the way into my home is through the kitchen. The floor is often littered with hay and bits of straw and the odd farm dog. It would be a losing battle to try to keep it tidy and I just go with the flow. I have men coming into the kitchen and they all take their wellies off but I usually tell them not to bother. I would rather have a relaxed home than worry about the carpets.
My grandmother told me once, that you can spend all your life chasing 'dicky dirt' but will never catch him, and boy, was she right!
I'm chilled when people come to my home, I would rather they be comfortable than worry about what they were wearing.
Likewise I wouldn't think of taking my shoes off when going into anyone else's home.

Yep, we also take shoes off in our household and have slippers a plenty for us and guests.

Japanese culture (and other Asian countries too) also have this habit.

Noo I love my shoes. They never leave my feet. That said, I've got alternate home sneakers.

Sometimes its better if you leave you shoes on and keep the smell from escaping.

Not a problem if your "shoes" are flipflops. :D

Mr BB, on several occasions, had pre-arranged to take bosses/associates (Irish, Brits) to a majlis during certain holidays and was shocked and embarrassed for them when they removed their shoes as they had holes in their socks!!!

If the floor was made of marble or ceramic, then I never take off my shoes.
But if it was a nice rug, then I'll always take off my shoes and enjoy the silky rug ;)
