World of Weird - Fir tree grows inside lung Apr 15, 2009
I hear weird and wonderful stories every now and then, but this one really is amazing - and gross at the same time!

Astonished surgeons have removed a two-inch long fir tree growing inside a patient's lungs.

Doctors thought Artyom Sidorkin, 28, had cancer when he began coughing up blood and complaining of agonising chest pains.

But as they operated to remove a tumour the medics were amazed to discover the perfectly formed spruce thriving inside the lung.

"I blinked three times and thought I was seeing things," said surgeon Vladimir Kamashev at Izhevsk Hospital in Russia.

Doctors believe that Artyom breathed in a tiny seed which then began growing in his lung and that the sharp pains were the plant's needle-like leaves digging into his lung.

"It was very painful. But to be honest I did not feel any foreign object inside me," he explained.

It could be the answer to living in Mars. Think about it, you dont need to inhale/exhale anymore. the exchange of O2 and C02 is happening in your lungs.

how can a plant grow beyond the tinest sprout in the complete absence of light?

http://www.teachersdomain.org/resource/ ... lantsgrow/

"During the earliest stages of plant growth, the first root, called the taproot, stretches downward into the soil in search of water and to establish a firm structural foundation for the plant. The root grows both by adding cells and by elongating cells that already exist. Before long, the root forms branches, which improve the plant's support system and its ability to absorb water from the soil.

Not long after the taproot has become established in the soil, the shoot, or stem, of the seedling begins to stretch upward in search of light. The time-lapse video of this reveals the seedlings' need for light: They bend first one way and then the next in what becomes a repetitive waving motion as they follow the sun's movement throughout the day.

So far, all of the energy that the plant requires for growth comes from food stored in the part of the seed called the endosperm. As the stem stretches skyward it carries with it what is left of the food stores in the endosperm. Before long, however, this food will be depleted and the plant will need to create its own food. To do this, the plant must first grow leaves."

++

Leaves (or the many pine needles as shown in the picture) can't grow without light.

Yep I'm a killjoy but I'm on topic! :D

Thats exactly what I was thinking, how can a tree grow in the absense of light.

This story is along the same lines when someone told they had found a kidney stone the size of a fottball

Considering it was distributed by Reuters, the international press agency, I don't doubt it's authenticity!

Whatever, it's not the first time a story like this has come up, and it won't be the last.

Keep on disbelieving things if you wish, but sometimes things just happen, there is no logical reason for it, it just does.

And considering it has been reported globally and in the medical word, there is reason to doubt it.

And you say YOU'RE a cynic !! :)

This is no conspiracy, I just think it's a dumb jape in the international press.

I am good at trust buddy, I use it wisely. I have a few close friends who I trust with my life and I've NEVER been let down yet. Amazing but true :D

Also look at the ruler in the pic. It shows the sprig is 2.5 cm not 5 cm. Not a shred of credibility left. The whole thing is a daft prank, and it's not the first time. You've never seen a hoax before....?

Yeah have you ever actually been into a forest of Firs? There is literally no light at the ground level, so the theory is flawed!

Just goodle the story and see how many places have reported it, you're wrong on this one - end of!
