Yeah, that type of tip is pitiful considering the amount of money recovered, but why do people think they're entitled something just because they didn't steal the money.
The Egyptian (not a reflection on all Egyptians!) is exactly the kind of person who WOULD expect a cash reward.
But a reward does not have to be cash. A simple thank you would satisfy many. There are endless ways to thank someone more. What better way to start a frendship! Invite the person for a coffee etc etc.
This guy chose to reward the Indian by cash, but 3 dings amounts to an insult, and the Egyptian may as well have been giving the Indian guy the bird. Of course he deserved the DK response.
A similar thing happened to me.
My son found a new blackberry whilst quad biking and wanted to keep it.
It was a good opportunity for me to teach him that the right thing to do is return the phone to its owner.
I starting calling recent contacts (he had literally thousands of contacts and was obviously an important guy).
The first few couldn't speak english.
His wife, huda, then answered and proceeded to inform me that it was NOT my phone, and I was NOT to switch it off (practically accused me of stealing it).
I'm thinking "She must think I'm a real dhead... stealing her husbands phone and then calling people from the contact list using the same sim card!".
The word quickly spread that an infidel thief had grandpa mohammed's phone, and other relatives, who had better english, started called me to arrange collection.
An office boy/driver/slave then came to collect it and thanked us (I doubt he was instructed to thank us) and I (and my son who I might add I was trying to teach) felt like this guy had just bent me over and done what he had probably learnt to do in the Choueifat school toilets.
