Really.

Books are amazing! You make your own movie whilst reading a book. Heck you may imagine many movies depending on the chapter, paragrah, page (or different movies each time you pick up the same book to read it).

Sadly I may be in the minority.

Despite them being grouped together often, I don't think Books & Films are comparable as sources of enjoyment. As proof of this assertion, name 3 film adaptations of books that were better than the original source material (and if anyone says "Harry Potter", I will personally hunt you down and send you the way of the Dodo).

It's hard to do. And there have been THOUSANDS of films made from books.

Films are inherently passive forms of entertainment. Also consider the constant steam of lowest common denominator drivel put out by Hollywood that is ostensibly aimed at people with the emotional and mental maturity of a 12 year old girl (case in point, Transformers 2), whilst most books require the reader to engage more actively.

The world would be a much more civilised place if TV was switched off for a year and people were forced to read a few books instead.

My three recommendations would be:

Any Human Heart by William Boyd - (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Any-Human-Heart ... 0141009284)

Stalingrad by Antony Beevor (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stalingrad-Anto ... 965&sr=1-1)

Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Crime-Punishmen ... 128&sr=1-2)

Agree. My post was not meant to query about the movie version of a particular book but rather a general preference for books or movies. My observation is that most avid readers watch less television and do not go to the movies as often.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've read Crime and Punishment. Will add the other 2 to my "to read" list.
