This country is like most others in the world, there is drinking/drugs, violence, domestic abuse, cheating, prostitution, corruption, injustice etc. It is certainly not as bad as in some regions of the world. I agree that this country feels safe from heavy crime, but then again one can feel the same safety living in a small Nordic country as well.
I sort of enjoy the negative experiences I have had here. It gives you a new way of looking at things, and makes you cope differently. I think I am becoming a more flexible person, and certainly more aware of cultural differences and different norms of behaviour. Admittedly, I still have moments where I just can't understand why things aren't done "the proper way" (whatever that is!), but it passes. You definitely have a bit of a shock when you first arrive in the country, but it too passes.
I enjoy the multiculturalism (despite this being the most racist place I have lived in), and I think there are a lot of beautiful things about the Gulf culture. I love the architecture, the food, the music etc. The sunny weather is also great (minus the summer heat).
When you know you don't have to stay here forever you can just take things in stride.
