When will the authorities learn to limit the engine capacity and car size of young drivers here! They have zero consideration for anyone else. They should have been given at least the maximum penalty.

Two young motorists who killed a man while they were racing at twice the speed limit have been jailed for three months.

The accident happened in the Al Khawaneej area of Dubai when the teenagers were speeding at 130kph in a 60kph zone.

Both the drivers - Emirati students aged 19 - were in suped-up cars, and one was not wearing glasses he needed for driving.

Although they faced a maximum jail sentence of three years for the charge of causing the death of another motorist, Dubai Traffic Court took pity on them.

An official from Dubai Traffic Prosecution, which is considering whether to appeal against the sentence, told 7DAYS that the judge had taken their age into account when sentencing the pair. Under UAE law, a judge can issue a minimum sentence to a young defendant.



Racing teens banned for two years after fatal crash
As well as the jail term, the teenagers have also been fined dhs500 each and will have to pay dhs200,000 blood money to the victim’s family. They have also been banned from driving for two years. They were arrested after the crash in February.

“The two students were racing when one of them crashed into the car of a 33-year-old Emirati who was joining the road,” said an official from traffic prosecution.

The racers hit their brakes when they saw the car but they skidded for about 50m.

The first car managed to avoid a collision but the car behind ploughed into the third vehicle, killing the driver. “They had modified their engines and were also racing in a residential area,” the official added.

At the time of the crash, prosecutor Salah Bu Farousha warned motorists that roads were not for racing and urged parents to keep an eye on their children.

Whilst it was stated that the engines were souped up, this would have been illegal.

I believe that the maximum sentance should be implimented in such a case.

Sure does make a month in jail for a "Kiss on the Cheek" rather ridiculous!!!!!!!!!

Yes it does Sage, and the fact the the judge 'took pity on them because of their age' is beyond ridiculous.

Cohabiting without marriage, flipping the finger, swearing are all seen as worse offences than killing someone through recklessness.

Now its all good to show pity, so shouldnt pity also have been shown to the kissing couple or that Aussie nurse deported for flipping the finger?

Are only people who kill through reckless driving deserving of pity ?

Don't you know that there are two rules of law. Those for expats and those for Emiratis.

Is this to say that at 19 you can own a car, get a driving license, kill someone, you get special treatment because at 19 you are considered a juvenile, but on the other hand they are old enough to get married? Maybe the slap on the hand has more to do with the family name.

Butwhat makes it worse is the man they killed was also an Emirati! Therefore the famil should be appealing for the maximum sentence.

You obviously don’t know the rampant internal racism that goes inside the Emirati community.

There are social stratas and sub races.

The guy probably killed by these mongoloids was an Emirati of Balouchi descent. While the two mongoloids were of pure Bedouin tribal descent.

It’s all very draconian

This bit wasnt there in 7days. So in effect these people race to earn pocket money (some of which no doubt goes to customized numer plates!)

A question to be asked of the Authorities. If the so called sport of Street Drag Racing is so well known here why is the appropriate action not being taken to stop this?

Sage as I keep lamenting proper law enforcement, all the laws are already there but a very few enforcers or enforced The roads are the biggest cause of death in this country and what happens. More radars are put into place and fines ae doubled !

Oh, I stand corrected. Those responsible were "boys". So let me rephrase what I wrote:

The blood money is probably only the tip of what is being paid to the family of the MAN who died.

Better? (I really don't see how that changes the point.) (It must be hard being perfect )

This sentence is a mockery of justice. It will only encourage other street drag racers not to worry about the consequences of their reckless behavior!!!

How about they confiscate every car in Dubai and force us all to drive Smart Cars...with electric engines?

You can be sure that someone would upgrade the engine, put wide wheels on it and there would still be, albeit a little boring, drag racing in Khawaneej. The problem is each race would last about a week.

Double standards are alive and well in Dubai, but what can we do about it? We have no voting rights or any other democratic rights at all, so they can do what they like. (Turns on tape recorder...) "If you don't like it, leave!") Click.

I have a much directer method, since the law doesn't provide for decent people.

Walk up to these locals with special privileges, pull a shooter and pop one or two of those mofo's to get the message across and pull a sprint.

This justice system is insane. I tend to correct things a bit with firm footing. What you got now bitches, hmm?

Its sad but on the other hand..i now have the opportunity to run over my landlord and still get away with it!
but....shoot....im only an expat! damn..so close...
