Only complaint he had with Emirates was the timing of the food served. One meal just after take off and one just before landing with a long gap in the middle, other than that he was quite happy.
Anyway I haven't met a Canadian yet who would choose Air Canada over Emirates, so yes just average people caught in the diplomatic crossfire.
Here's the thing, I would NEVER fly with Air Canada out of choice, they have the worst service and always manage to lose your bag even if its a flight within the country! I'm flying with Air France, I paid 1200, so its possible if i had booked my flight in advance I might have received a cheaper fair on Emirates or Etihad, but my trips are usually planned a month or so before.
