Today it is official, South Sudan is the world's newest country. http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/afric ... ?hpt=hp_t1

It is going to be very interesting to see how Sudan and South Sudan proceed with all the loose ends of separation. Many contentious issues to resolve. Hopefully there will be peace!

I'm watching this closely. I'll be going to North Sudan in November, on business (third visit in 3 years).

Interestingly, Khartoum is one of the friendliest and safest places we've visited in Africa. It is a long way away from any of the 'trouble areas' - Sudan being the biggest country in Africa. There are many South Sudanese in Khartoum and Northern Sudan generally - and when I was last there, all I spoke to (North and South) were saying that the South would separate.

Whilst everyone spoke that there would be peace - there were rumblings that there might be some trouble. Interesting one to watch.

Cheers,
Shafique

I have a friend ( who recently left for home ) who fought in the Sudan civil war back in the day for the longest time, before he was sent here, real tough guy and a proper bush man, heat, sand and stuff like that didn't bother him at all. Could fall asleep anywhere. Once after a few grueling days in the desert, we made it out to tarmac and were refueling. The dude fell asleep inbetween the car and pump half on the kerb and half on tarmac !

Anyways hopefully this will bring peace to the conflict once and for all.
