The Word "boy"

The word "boy" Nov 03, 2006
It bugs me everytime someone uses the word "boy" in the context of "office boy, delivery boy, etc, boy". I find it offensive.

There is a story today in the Gulf News about the death of a 40 year old married father of one on his way to work. He was employed by the Gulf News to deliver newspapers.

Here is the first sentence of the article. "Gulf News delivery boy Furkan Ali Yousuf Ali Kazi was killed yesterday when his motorbike hit an overturned trailer on SZR. The article has a picture of the employee - certainly not a "boy".

Is it just me?

Reminds me of the movie "Cool Hand Luke"

"Taking mah shirt off boss?"

"Not today boy!"

Not offensive if you come from the Deep South I suppose.

I don't like either, but our office 'boys' official job title is 'office boy'.

I call him by his first name though, which is Office.

I find it offensive too. In our office they're called office boys too and the people who have that designation don't bother at all. Well I think it really depends on who are managing the HR/Admin department. It's HRD's job to look into this matter.

Where/when did this term come from anyway? :? Maybe they couldn't think of another way to call them..

That's it, there are many other names for that job. So what do you think those businesses who designate their office assistants with the ''officeboy'' title?

Simple: racist/or arseholes who think they are better than the next person.

I've heard people say "office boys" who would not dare do it in England, USA, Canada, etc.? And only because they would be fired.
