Looks like its out of the TRON movie, But it's the real deal

Remember the Misa Digital Guitar? Well, it's called the Kitara now, it's taken on a fresh lick of paint, and it's ready to be pre-ordered now for an April delivery. The Kitara discards old fashioned strings and has you strumming along on a multitouch display instead, populating the fretboard with a litany of buttons that modify the aural output from your digital input. It has an onboard synthesizer, but the real magic will happen once you plug it into your own audio equipment and start experimenting. Basically, it's like the Kinect of electronic music -- just needs a few inventive souls to harness its potential properly. They'll need fat wallets too, mind you, as turning this invention into a viable product has meant a lofty $849 starting price in the US. See a video demo and the full Kitara press release after the break.

Doesn't sound anything like a guitar. A guitar is a guitar!!!

Don't they already have instruments that do that and they just put it in the shape of a guitar?

No no no no no no no.....

Fail!

A guitar needs strings to give it voice and expression. You cannot bend a note if its just a touchpad and you cannot vary the tone and pitch to the sensitivity of the human ear that give virtuoso's like Jimmy Page the edge on a synth.

$800 means its also cheap. A classic limited edition Fender Stratocaster or a Gibson Les Paul will cost you in the region of $10,000 to $20,000 and worth every cent as a crafted musical instrument on the level of a Stradivarius or Guernari violin.

Jimi Hendrix and Paul Kossoff must be turning in their graves!

Send it back where it belongs next to the Bontempi organ and Rolf Harris' Stylophone..

@DesertMan - True it actually would end up becoming a ps3 peripheral :)

@Bora - Haha yes , Usually all those sounds can be generated using a synthesizer, Some people refer to this as a IPAD With an extension :)

@Knight - Well , i guess wannabe guitarists who dont like guitar hero could perhaps use this, I think it could be a good learning tool maybe , for those who CANT AFFORD THE REAL THING, and to those who have trouble learning the chords, 8) , But since it is a synthesizer with a an extended stick, the range of sounds it can produce would be more robust then any electric guitar rigged to a good amp 8)

Nope. There is absolutely no way a synthesiser can match the infinite degree of tonal variation a human artist can create from a string. The electric part of the guitar is merely a pick-up that takes that sound and transfers it to the amplifier.

It was soon found that overloading that signal produced a further interesting set of sounds...from there it was all electronics. Watch 'It Might Get Loud' for just a glimpse of 3 different yet amazing guitarists discussing the various merits of the technology or even the lack of it.

Get a Fender Stratocaster, plug it into a Marshall AC30 valve amp, run that through a 27" cabbed speaker, put the sound through an overload pedal and turn it up to 11 and THEN you will hear why a synth will never compete. A sound so solid, it can blow a girls clothes off!

8) 8) 8)

Not related to this post

But the fender stratocraster sounds being generated with a new plugin called , Vir 2 Electri6ity - http://www.vir2.com/instruments/electri6ity , Apparently it can even generate the Les Paul signature sounds.

In-case the real thing can'e be afforded

- Example of the plugins at work,
