Shocking news - yes it is pretty much the main news here too.
Looks like a robbery gone badly wrong - and not a crime we hear a lot of, i.e. robberies in hotels aren't that common to my knowledge. The hotel industry is a big part of the economony and the staff are usually very friendly (we get good feedback from the regular stream of foreign visitors to us here, as well as I go to hotels for functions and dinners etc).
Edit - 3 hotel workers are being charged, is the latest I've heard.
We have a low level of crime and a very active press, including a couple of tabloids. So all the lurid crimes are reported in gory details - so this crime has shocked the people 'around the water cooler'. The lady isn't famous here though, it's just because it was a bride on honeymoon and a guest to Mauritius.
Minister of tourism Nandcoomar Bodha said: “Our thoughts are with Michaela’s family and friends during this terrible tragedy.
“It is the first time that a murder has ever taken place in a hotel in Mauritius and the island’s extremely low crime rate means this has come as a terrible shock to the whole nation.
(He's glossing over the fact that there +are+ low levels of robberies from hotels and general burglaries of homes - but not to the level of say London or Jhb, say)
Cheers,
