Road accidents and road safety Mar 03, 2006
There are more and more worries about the number of people who are injured in accidents on roads.

In your opinion:
-Why do accidents happen?
-Who are most likely to have accidents -pedestrains, cyclists, etc?
-What are the steps that might be taken to reduce the number of accidents?

Er accidents happen because there are people of all driving standards on the roads, some have learnt to drive very differently from others, so there's a big mish-mash of stuff.

But even basic common sense seems to be missing from many people when they get behind the wheel, they drive too fast, too close to the car in front, push in, don't wait, don't indicate or use mirrors, these are all really basic things that many people don't do.

7 Days just did an expose on driving schools in the UAE and the standards they're teaching people are shocking.

Why do accidents happen?

It would be much quicker to actually list "why aren't there more accidents?"- It is an absolute miracle!!
The only way to reduce car accidents is the removal of driving licenses and the impounding of cars for repeated infringements.
To reduce pedestrian deaths, under passes and overpasses are required as well as common sense-the shortest /quickest route from one point to another is definitely not the safest-DUH!!
Cyclists- crackdown and fine pople or impound their bike if they don't have a cycle helmet or light on their bike, and if they are going down a street the wrong way-cycle lanes work in other countries but I suspect that would become an undertake lane or carpark zone!!
