http://gulfnews.com/news/gulf/uae/gover ... s-1.568038

this is what GN had to say..I thought the artical in Forbes was more sarcastic than a serious suggestion

Dubai interested in hosting headquarters of the United Nations
Government shows interest should the world body choose to move it

Dubai: The government of Dubai has expressed interest in hosting the headquarters of the United Nations should the world body choose to move it.

"The Dubai government announces its complete preparedness to host the United Nations headquarter on its territory should the [decision makers] choose to move it," read the statement.

The announcement, made by the Dubai government's media office, follows an in Forbes magazine by Joel Kotkin and Robert J. Cristiano, arguing that the UN headquarters were a burden for the American taxpayer, and accusing the body of being a "sinkhole dominated by anti-American, anti-Semitic and authoritarian fantasies".

The authors called Dubai "the world capital of the future" because of its diversity and proximity to major cities in Asia, Africa and Europe, and advocated the building of a "United Nations City".

There is talk to move the body to a temporary location by 2015 and a relocation committee has suggested that it be moved to Singapore.

I think the UN would consider two, if not more, points before setting up house in the UAE.

(1) Human Rights
(2) Justice System

The UAE isn't exactly big on either of those issues.

So, it would mean that the UAE would have to improve on both, or the UN would have to scrap those issues. Hmmmmm................

that s not going ot happen, period, it was a sarcastic joke. There are way too many UN employees to grant immunity in an environment of so many anachronistic laws, the UAE does not recognize the State of Israel, and the whole purpose of the UAE would be to turn the Dubai based UN as a marketing tool.

I also think its not likely to happen any time soon and the UAE would surely use it as a marketing tool, but so will the UN...

In fact, if the United Nations would ever agree to a move of its headquarters to Dubai, besides security issues, they will demand rigorous change of the system. It could have benefits unseen but also very rigorous change for the state. Also, UN diplomats and secretaries aren't exactly low paid to say the least, so the economic spinoff might be good for the state and some business services, although the corresponding inflation side effects (see prices and problems in New York) will turn negative for middle and lower class workers. I think it will be disastrous for the middle class living standards.

Its more of a joke if you look at it in the objective sense of the world. But everything is possible under the right conditions. Lets see what the UN says... :P

I don't think it was a serious matter to begin with, I guess it was just a suggestion of the author for the huge building to be for one purpose, that's all so keep your pants up LOL.

Why is it a joke robbyg ? UAE is not good enough for it ? if there will be any changing in the systems required I guess it will be for the best of all ! and could you enlighten us about what is the "the objective sense of the world"

But anyway I though the UN works independently rather than following the rules and laws of the country it is in !

Do you really think that the UN is doing it's job fairly ? or in a democratic ? there are only few countries with a veto power ? all the articles you posted are against what is happening in Israel and Iraq, yet the UN did nothing even though they are clear issues and governments admitted their wrong doing. If you ask me it is a joke by it self and should be named UusaN . !

Shouldn't they apply those laws instead of it being in a dusty book somewhere :)

I dont think we can ever escape the cycle of double standards, be it as a country or an organisation. Few of us set up the system, allow it to run and then majority of the poor sods (like myself) pay the price. Seems like everything done these days is about where the money is at. We are all pawns in a much bigger playing field. Everyone who thinks they are better off than the other lives an illusion

UN translates into big business Kid. All of these "organizations" or big summits (Big 8) are about business. They all have agendas. The one on the table, and the one under the table.

The UN War Crimes Tribunal is the International War Crimes Tribunal in Hague. They were big on hunting down and bringing to trial Nazi's who committed war crimes against the Jews, but not too big on bringing charges against Jews that committed war crimes against the Palestinians. With all the evidence that was provided after the last attack on Palestine by Israel, they managed to bury the charges and documentation validating claims again Israel, which claims were made and documented by recognized organizations. Bringing Israel to stand trial for war crimes wouldn't be good for "business".

It's organizations such as Human Rights Watch who expose countries that deny individuals their human rights that get kicked in the butt for trying to do the right thing in the wrong country because what they do is not good for "business".

The UN would never move to the UAE even if it recognizes Israel. If I am not mistaken the UN is required to be in a real country not some pimped-up beduin settlement.

For no other reason that I am free and choose not only what I can say but where I live and there is nothing you can do about it. You really must think being a moderator is something important dont you?

By the way, shouldn't you, as an Osama Bin Laden admirer (based on your avatar) be in a cave somewhere? I imagine that now that the CIA and all are concentrating on Yemen (quite near) they'll be monitoring you (for starteres they know exactly where you live). Enjoy.
