Same as the UK with North Sea oil/gas. I've been told the UK still relies on the Middle East for oil because the North Sea source 'is not the right sort of oil' for e.g. petrol.

Prob also to do with long term supply.

Read somewhere yesterday that Abu Dhabi sits on a tenth of the world's proven oil supply.

An oil trader once told me it apparently has something to do with the sulphur content of the oil, refineries have to be configured to process it, and of course more sulphur = more pollution.

Some countries have large reserves, but the wrong “type” of oil – I suppose this is more expense to process.

It was a reference to the latest Presidential campaign. You obviously didn't follow it. Not that I expected you to follow it. Sorry.

and isn't it more Churn, baby, Churn? Since they are talking about the Alaskan shale oil aren't they. No more drilling and watching the spout of oil popup, now they strip the landscape a few metres deep and process the stuff to squeeze some oil out. Lovely for the environment that is.
