It is the responsibility of the UAE government to protect labourers from exploitation.
Their situation elsewhere in the world is not an excuse to exploit them!
This is obviously a very sensitive subject with the Government and I hope the BBC continue to highlight the labourers plight. Well done to the BBC!

1) There is nothing grossly wrong if a destitute worker is willing to share a room with 10 people and work for peanuts
2) What is wrong is when a worker comes here and finds out he is getting half of what he was told or signed on, and then he is not allowed to resign or return as his passport isnt with him or for whatever reason.

i agree with u some of the employees are bad but this is not the place for BBC to come interfere. they should write about something better. something about iraq and afghanistan. how the british troops are exploiting ppl. how the red cross is exploiting ppl. they will only give food to the ppl provided they turn christian. OH MY GOD ANOTHER CONCPIRICY THE MUSLIMS have come up with

Firstly it's the job of the and the conscience of the community to protect people from exploitation.
The government is supposed to uphold the constution, if you are exploited in the UK, u can go to the police, then you can go to court, you can go to the ILO.....
The BBC has reported enough about Iraq and Afghanistan, don't derail from this topic.
Red Cross exploiting people....sheesh how low can you stoop? Go and see for yourself firsthand the good work they are doing....surely there must be a few rogues in that organization, but that does not compare to the good work thev'e done over the years!

They were brought here on false hopes and never to be realized dreams - being cheated to build up this place. You have no patriotism towards your own country until you work with your own hands to build it. With foreign workers being brought it to clean roads, workplaces, run homes, take care of kids, build the cities - this place has nothing it can say it has done on its own. Especially when people are cheated - the place gets cursed.

However, this does not give companies the right to exploit them the way they do! Everyone has the right to clean running water, good wash/toilet facilities and to be looked after. Sadly the way many of these companies operate is substandard, but in a country with virtually zero human rights, what can you expect.
Once again, the UAE professing to be a progressive, developed country, only proving that it is 3rd world and stuck in the dark ages.

rudeboy, why aren't the journalists in the UAE writing about all of the problems here and why isn't the UAE govt trying to make things better here before worrying about the Palestinians, Afghans and Iraqis?

The reasoning from the authorities would be that it's not permitted because of National Security issues!

Just because something has been discussed before, doesn't mean the topic is closed or over and done with. The problem still exists! It hasn't gone away, it needs constant awareness and updates. You really are a piece of work.
If you have nothing to contribute on the matter then don't. Or if you do, how about joining a group called Dubai Helping Hands, which collects supplies and distributes them to the workers!

It is hypocritical when you say that the BBC and UK govt should spend time working on domestic issues (and the US too from other threads) before criticizing or exposing what is happening in other countries, but then you don't expect the UAE media and govt to focus on their own domestic issues before looking elsewhere (like Palestine, Afghanistan or Iraq - what you mention most).
