Fever is rising nationwide for the tour of tours. Will it happen this week?

The Elfstedentocht (or, in West Frisian, Alvestêdetocht, sometimes in English : Eleven Cities Tour), at 200 km, is the world's largest and longest speed skating competition and leisure skating tour, and is held in the province of Friesland, Netherlands only when the ice along the entire course is 15 cm thick.

Only 15 times in history the heroic tour took place and it was already 15 years ago the last one was held. Chances are this weekend it might go through. The 11 city representatives already had a meeting to discuss the situation, and that by itself is already a big thing.

I'm psyched.

Wow FD! I've never heard of it before. I had a quick read on Wiki and it will take some stamina to finish that. Are you a spectator or are you going to give it a try?

I'll be spectating. This evening at 7pm, there is another meeting, afterwards we'll know more. The 43rd brigade is deployed preparing and guarding the ice. I tried explaining this to an American. I told him it's like you know combining Super Bowl, the World Series, the Stanley Cup and the basketball play-offs all in one, but you never know when it's gonna happen. It didn't make any impression. He just shrugged his shoulders.

Keep us posted FD. We have beautiful bitterly cold days in the UK at the moment and the Continent seems colder. I hope it lasts for the race.

It was a no-go BM. It was since 15 years, skating on the Amsterdam canals was possible again though. Last Saturday was a blast, with a traditional race. For younsters it was the first time. I just watched, thought it would be fair the cup goes to the younger generation. No, not really, I was enjoying schnapps. It was a memorable weekend with memorable sites, despite that the tour of tours didn't go through. Too bad, some canals were broken by boats, so a real round tour wasn't possible.
