could this work in Dubai ? Jul 30, 2009
Iranian officials came up with a new idea to solve traffic jams in their capital by issuing a gas card for each car owner that limits his gas monthly quantity after calculating distance between his home and work place beside the average of his usual daily trips like picking up kids from school and weekly shopping , and when his limit is up well he just have to walk or stay home so fare it is working perfectly as they said.

Would it make a different in Dubai or heavily trafficked cities?

Would not work in Dubai as a lot of folks use their motors for pleasure and recreation and the only outcome of rationing things is usualy a surge in black market activities.

That is completely wrong. Iran has rationed the usage of petrol because they were afraid of an embargo on Petrol from US and were looking for a solution to maintain control over that. The other reason was to slowly increase the price of petrol to its full price instead of the subsidized price.

It was a complete failure as the usage of petrol was increased contrary to the plan and it had no impact on Tehran traffic.

The limit was 100 liters per month with no regards of your activity and your car fuel usage. if you wanted to use more than that, you had to pay the full price.

Now the limit is getting smaller and smaller and the whole thing is going to end in a few years.

What Dubai actually needs is a proper efficient public transport system.

Traffic is becoming horrendous. I remember the scenario 10 years ago and could never have imagined what things are like today.
Public transport has to be improved. Even taxis should be treated as public transport and more than one fare allowed to board.
Bring in smaller Japanese cars for taxis and also buses which are 20 seaters.
Once you improve the public transport system start taxing the hell out of private cars and raise gasoline prices.
As for the Emiratis, well, well, well. In addition to their cars they could probably be provided with modern camels equipped with roller skates.

Why should gas prices be increased when its already the costliest in the entire Gulf region?

Solutions for countries with no gas (Singapore) shouldnt be imposed on a country with large oil & gas reserves....

Personally I find the situation to be substantially better now than it was 2 years back, at least in Dubai
