Why do people always ask to borrow a cigarette, they never give it back do they?

Say you've run out.

i dont mind if someone asks to HAVE a cigarette, its just that when people ask to BORROW it, doesnt make sense !

I always asked them for ID. When they say "what?" I say: "ID so I know where to go to collect the cigarrate". They walk away...

They might probably accumulating it til it reaches to a pack then they'll be happy to return it back

where i come from, if someone stops you in the street and asks for, or to borrow a cigarette, you run, or walk away.

wanna know why?

them: "can a borrow a cigarette?"
you: "dont smoke"
them: "do u have a light?"
you: "no, sorry"
them: "can you spare 20p, i need to get the bus?"
you: "sorry, so money"
them: "just gimme your wallet" and may brandish knife

god i miss those days, not much crime here!

but what i said is very rare, usually if your in the wrong place (newcastle) at the wrong time (after midnight)!!

I think in general people here don't mind so much as ciggies are so cheap. But they wouldn't do it elsewhre because of the expense.
