Just a quick recommendation for fans of classic TV.. the new series Hawaii Five-0 is well worth a watch - 3rd episode due out next week. (I'm not usually a fan of re-makes, but this is good - I thought)

OMG! They remade 5-O?

I was addicted to that when I were a nipper!

I watched the first series of the remake of Battlestar Galactica and that was quite well done too.

Anyone remember Rip Chord? That one had me jumping off the bed and skinning my knees every week. Now I do it for real!

The other one was a kids series from Hungary or Czech Republic called 'The Singing Ringing Tree'. It scared the crap out of me when I was small!

Hey, I remember the singing ringing tree - that was weird. I don't remember being scared - but do remember being fascinated by it. There was a bear in it - IIRC??

Agree with Battlestar Galactica - although it got a bit weird at the end (jumped the shark, imo).

Are you old enough to remember 'the flashing blade'? I think that may be one of my earliest memories of Kids TV (I can still remember some of the theme tune ..' it is better to have fought and lost...')

There was a creepy dwarf and a wicked witch and friendly but scary fish and a forest of thorns that appeared from nowhere...the witch froze the lake so the fish could not help the heroine. All quite blurry now but scared the pants off me!

Some of us are old enough to remember episode 1 of Dr Who with William Hartnell in the title role!

Sylvia and Gerry Anderson were my heroes: Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray and then the brilliant Thunderbirds!!! I am still a fan and the green Jeep is nicknamed Thunderbird 2!

Watching the state funeral of Sir Winston Churchill.

Walking across the river Tees when it froze solid in the coldest winter of the century.

Seeing colour tv for the first time (It was coverage of Wimbledon and the grass was so green!).

I recently bought a copy of the Beatles movie 'Help'. Digitally re-mastered and cleaned up. I went to see the film when it came out in a cinema in Shanklin on the Isle of Wight with my older sister who screamed almost the whole way through!

I have had to show people my passport before now as they can't believe which decade I was born!

They don't make em as they used to!

I loved the old Hawaii Five-O.

I watched the premier episode of the new 5-O on Monday night last week, on CBS, but wasn't impressed at all. The new Danno was OK but the new Margarette sucked.

I'm a different decade from you -man had landed on the moon when I was born! (So probably two decades later - if you remember JFK being shot! - wow, I wouldn't believe it)

Tom Baker was the definitive Dr Who for me, but I remember John Pertwee (later Worzell Gummidge) - we had b&w tvs and remember the white dot after switching off the TV (and no remotes either). Thunderbirds are go, Dangermouse, Jack-a-nory, Swapshop, Tomorrow People...

How about comics - I bought the first copies of Jackpot when it came out, my dad insisted I read the Beano (coz he did) - but also read Whizzer and Chips... ahh and Gob stoppers, liquorice wheels and generally 'can I have 10p bag of mixed sweets please!'

Comics!

I was brought up on The Eagle and Dan Dare! Decidedly dodgy now!

I remember Action Man being launched!

I had a massive gun toy called a 'Johnny Seven' with 7 different things that fired. You couldn't get away with that today!

My first 'comic' was Look and Learn as it had the Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire. A brilliant cartoon series drawn by a guy called Ron Embleton. I managed to find a huge album book a few years ago with the original cartoons scanned and reproduced.

I have recently bought some compilations of the old Commando series 'Trash mags' as we knew them. They were a currency in my youth and I always appreciated the quality of the art in them. Even more now bearing in mind that each page had to be laboriously hand drawn and inked with a 00 size sable brush. The artists were brilliant. Still a fan of Frank Bellamy!

Before Tom Baker, there was Patrick Troughton. He was Dr Who for me. Beatles haircut and all! I always used to be terrified of the Daleks and hide behind the sofa when they appeared! I never realised that if you went upstairs they were screwed!!!

My brothers and I were strictly readers of the Broadsheet variety with 'The Topper' and 'The Beezer', and the quality of their 'Whizz Bangs' were by far superior !

Dr Who was/is way too deep for me. I did like Tom Baker though and it just clicked that guys who I meet that resemble him, I think are cool. Never knew what I saw in them until now.
I was into The Goodies, Monkey Magic.

I'm sure I've got a whizz bang somewhere - I got one in a copy of Dandy near Kentish Town tube c1981. Funny that I remember that!

Desperate Dan - he was the original Chuck Norris, come to think of it!

Benwj - don't you just mean 'Monkey' rather than monkey magic (or do you perhaps mean 'Animal Magic' with Johnny Morris!). Then there was also Kung Fu, and of course the Water Margin!

ITV tried to compete with Animal Magic. They had a series called Zoo Time hosted by Desmond Morris. It was far too high brow and intellectual, we all preferred Johnny Morris and his voice overs to the films!

Remember Daktari on saturday mornings? Clarence the Cross Eyed lion!

Blue Peter with Valerie Singleton, Christopher Trace (initially) and John Noakes. Down Shep! I had the pleasure to work with him many years later and have to say he is a real character and total gent. He also like a drink or ten!

Even today I cannot watch "Meridan Tonight" without shouting "HOW!" when I see Fred Dinnage

Or when Mike Reed was on Eastenders, shouting "Runaround", It got very old, very quickly with the wife, but I found it amusing (everytime) ... simple things

Remember Clackers, 2 snooker balls on a piece of string that you bounced off each other and hurt like f*&% if they hit you on the head ? If memory serves they were eventually banned !

The Beano was compulsory as my great aunt was one of the artists on Roger the Dodger, but the "Commando" mags were on our must have list on a Saturday morning (Am I correct in saying there was an Army, Navy & Airforce edition, there was definately more than one, because we used to get together and pass them around before heading off to play football) Football in the park, jumpers for goal posts 14 a-side made sense to us!

Damn - this feels like I'm in a time warp ...

Were summers really longer ?

The summers really were longer and we wished for those days in the winter when it snowed hard and we got days off school because the buses couldn't run. Heading to the nearest steep hill (the local golf course in my case which was the only time they allowed non members in) digging out toboggans from the garage loft and scraping the rust off them and spending all day hurtling to oblivion and crashing left and right.

Home for hot chocolate round the fire...

Eeh...they were the days!
