Banking In Dubai - HORROR STORIES Nov 17, 2009
Hello,

Firstly I'd like to say hello and secondly I hope you are reading this before signing up with MeBank or HSBC in Dubai.

I am currently trying to receive back a 100,000 aed deposit that I made with Me Bank when i signed up for a credit card. I cancelled the card in January. I have waited the 50 day period to ensure no further claims were made on the cards, and it is now the MIDDLE OF NOVEMBER and there is still no sign of my deposit being returned.

Unfortunately I am out of the UAE and am unable to get to the bank. So, here we go, phone banking in Dubai - WHAT A JOKE. I have made at least 20 calls to the bank and NOTHING ever gets acted upon. They sendinternal mails through to the branch - nobody ever contacts me. They try to make internal transfer calls - nobody ever picks up. I try online contact us - I GET A STANDARD response that is NEVER acted upon.

Who runs this bank? I can never get hold of anyone who cares or gives a damn about responsibility or customer service.

PLEASE DO NOT BANK WITH MeBANK.

Now shall I move onto HSBC who effectively told me that they wouldn't dip into my savings account (I was a premier customer) to clear a check that was being drawn against my account and that there would be no need to cancel it as there won't be enough funds in my current account. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT - HSBC clear the cheque to a rogue real estate agent and I end up losing almost 200,000 Aed.

HSBC then site some ridiculous small oprint in my contract despite BEING ADVISED BY HSBC that this would never happen.

They are all blue collar thieves and if anyone would like to know more about this then please let me know as i am finding it a disgrace and it's ruined me financially.

Good luck

David

Sadly that’s the grim reality when Banking in the GCC. The banks are all noobs with absolutely no sense of upholding the basic tenets of customer service.

The only bank I would recommend for people in the UAE who are into heavy transactions and have significant savings is Lloyds TSB Middle East.

The rest are just a bunch of nincompoops. You need to call the corporate office and move away from the generic customer service numbers they have given. Getting the GM of HSBC should not be difficult. Don’t settle for a manager move up the chain and impose yourself. If you have things documented to fortify your case all the better. Have you thought of getting your lawyers to write in to their legal department. You really need to fire on all cylinders.

God bless and hope you get you hard earned money back

Well firstly I'd have to ask 100,000 Dhs as a deposit for a CC? Whoever heard of such a thing, defo never heard of anyone being asked to leave a cheque for that amount.

Secondly, you cannot cancel checks in this country, it is seen as a binding contract, and would you have preferred the cheque to have bounced and then found yourself in prison?

I feel for your situation, but everyone's experience is different. I bank with HSBC and have never had one incident. Infact when money was stolen out my account they acted immediately.
