Ok lads and lassies,

From what I make out from all the information floating around on the internet, Getting a driving license in the UAE is a pain in the you know where . I would like your comments on the following

1. Is it true that their is some amount of discrimination involved in quick license acquisition for certain nationalities ? If in the even this is true on any level , would it be advisable to get the license from another emirate ?

2. Is the number hoops you have to jump through the same in every emirate ? In which emirate is it easy to get the license ?

3. Is it mandatory for everyone to go to driving school and take classes even though they already having driving experience ( I got no problem handling a stick) ? Is there any possibility one can just take the test ?

4. Any suggestions on HONEST driving academies in AD, DXB and SHJ ?

5. Could someone clarify what exactly is a F1 License ? what vehicle criteria is there that mandates getting this class of license ?

6. What is the fastest way of getting a local emarati license ?

7. Is the emarati license acceptable in the GCC ?

8. Is there a grace period for before you have to get the local license ?

9. How is public transport in uae in general , I have been reading about the DUBAI METRO, can it be compared to the TUBE in UK or the subway in the US ?

10. Is it possible to get around with public transport, commute to work ?

Yes, if your from the choosen few you can just swap your license, otherwise its a no go.

Yes all emirates have different loops to jump through, worst being Sharjah

Yes AFAIK. nobody cares if you can drive a stick or a schtick

No such thing

F1 ? I think that would be schumacher territory

Have a previous license from one of the blessed countries which you can swap it with a local one

Yes

No it cannot

Yes, but could add hours to travel time and a lot of hassle.

If your luck for say you live walking distance from a metro station ( walking distance in this country in the summer time is no more than 3 minutes and 5 max ) and your work place is also within walking distance of one
