Hi,
Thinking of buying either a VW Passat or an Audi A6 2.0. (second hand)

What are your takes / opinions on both cars and the differences? The VW salesguy told me that its all the same thing; same engine, company etc, but just a different label. Is that true?

Also, does anyone know the service / maintainance costs?

The sales guy is wrong!
The counterpart for the Passat would be the Audi A4! The A6 is one class higher. Both are good cars, and yes, Audi and VW are one company.
Anyhow, Audi uses the same chassis and the same engines as VW, but the interior is more high-grade then VW. For example the Audi A3 is known as the 'luxury Golf' in Germany.
The 2.0 should just be fine for the Passat (although you will not win any race with it ) but I would say that it is too weak for the A6. You should test drive the car and see it the power is fine for you!
