Of the property sites I've come across http://www.bhomes.com seems to the best. Is there anything like it?

I'm looking for a two bedroom apartment in a nice area. It'd be an added bonus, if the area also has an expat community around it. Shall I be looking into the Dubai Marina? Max I'm looking to spend is £80k GBP - 450k AED.

Any particular estate agents you recommend?

What percentage for downpayment do I need for a 450k property?

Given that I won't be living in it, at least for the time being, and I'd be paying the mortgage from the UK, would the bank be fine with it?

I'm very keen on hearing peoples' experiences on buying properties in the UAE.

I'm planning on visiting Dubai again in February or March, so I have until then to do research.

I would advise you to keep saving up Bruce. My friend is willing to pay AED1.2 for a one bedroomed apartment in the right place in JBR and she can't find anyone willing to sell to her. I would have thought you could pick up a two bedroom for around AED1.2 with a marina view. Look at Dubizzle for ideas. Beware of Estate Agents, they will promise you the earth and probably deliver nothing. You will have to pay for Land Registry aswell as SC's. I'm not sure about the Marina towers but there are some lovely looking buildings there. Good luck (LOL)

Thank my lucky stars I didn't, almost did back in the hey day ! Would be getting bread crumbs now for what I've would have paid for it, just the maintance charges are more than what I'm paying as rent now !

I did sell a quite a few though and it would be better not to mention what they think about owning them now.

Yes, I have heard tell that the rent is very reasonable for a family room in Karama.

Well hate to burst your bubble BM, but Arnie would side with DD and so will I! Do not buy property here, it is a bad investment, the market is only still going down. Build quality is terrible and I can guarantee you that the majority of buildings here are built with a life span of 30-40 years and that information comes straight out the mouths of the contractors brought in to do construction.

If you want to invest in property, you're far better off doing it elsewhere and renting here.

Virtually every single person I know who has bought property here, including myself, is regretting it.

You might feel that as a property investor you have rights - wrong. Contracts are not worth the paper they're written on and you can be shafted by the developer/landowner at any time.

I love my place in JBR. So what if it only lasts 40 years? I'm so old I will be dead and buried by then so what do I care? Meanwhile I'll enjoy it to the max. Life is such fun without any regrets.

Because a short lifespan means poor build quality and not a good investment for prospective buys when and if you choose to sell it on.

I don't consider my apartment to be of poor build quality. I got what I paid for.

Well the whole issue is much bigger than your apartment. And anyone can go to http://www.jbrcommunity.com to see pages filled with disdain and complaints for themselves. And these are not just limited to one development but rather unfortunately almost all.

Couldn't agree more DD, I have friends who bought in JBR and they now wish they hadn't.

It all depends on your outlook on life DDS. You get moaners everywhere , just look at yourself. I admit it must be rough in Karama. I am happy to look at the positives of owning at JBR. I wake up in the morning and see the lovely blue sea, have some breakfast, go for a walk along the Walk, say hello to my friends, spend some time at the pool, have a couple of glasses of wine and get picked up by my beautiful friend in his brand new X6. A perfect day for BM in JBR. Paradise! I love it.

As I thought. You are lost for words commenting on something of which you have absolutely no experience. If you had bought and been shafted I would have had more respect. Dissing Dubai Inc for the sake of it shows you to be the bitter individual you are. No UAE passport for you any time soon.
