Some people if they've been here long enough and contributed enough can get a 'local' passport, but it doesn't change your original nationality anymore than it would anywhere else.

I partially agree with you hack.88. There are nationals who deserve all which you mentioned but there are also many who have the idea that all this is free.
Inexchange for this a citizen is supposed to do something for the country, work hard for it and achieve for it.
A citizen should be ashamed if he is being lazy at a govt job and worse they overshadow citizens who work hard and want to serve their country but not just sticking national symbols on their cars.

I dont agree with that.
There are people who are awarded nationality NOT based on their contribution to the country but very high connections
however not all bedouins are originally stateless residents.

I completely Agree with you Bsorc they are spoiling their people In fact they are building this country with expats Thats call Brain Washing for other countries as they hire their best and keep them here And i do believe there are other countries better with their citizens though do they do not provide pocket money I dont mean to say anything offensive about UAE but All I am saying is that its not the best
Not_Sure
Of course not, because then i wont be authorized entry to all of europe. Unless christians start blowing themselves up :D doubt that will happen anytime soon...lol

This is not correct, although it's not an easy thing to achieve it is possible for a foreigner to gain UAE Citizenship.
Of course due to the nature of the Country and its ongoing development they are never going to grant this privilege to each an every applicant that has lived and worked here for 10 years (UN standard I believe) This would indeed mean that the Country would have a serious imbalance.

But you still wouldn't be 'local' though would you? Maybe the question needed to be re-phrased to 'can you gain citizenship?' because that and being 'local Emirati' is a completely different thing. Even if you gain citizenship, you still wouldn't be Emirati would you?

By the same token you would not be British / American / Canadian.
However once you have the UAE Citizenship then for all intents and purposes you would then be an Emerati Citizen. It would remain to be seen how many of the rights and privileges that you would granted. In actual fact you don't have to go very far back in the past here, especially in Dubai, many of the prominent families originate from Iran.

This is why the UAE restricts citizenship, and for good reason.
No one should be given citizenship to a country until they have embraced the local culture and would pass a local themselves.
The UK is experiencing the negative effects of not doing this.
In Australia they now have a citizenship test which asks questions like how many cans there are in a slab of beer etc... but it can be taken in arabic which defies the purpose really.
So what do you need to do to pass as a UAE national?
1. speak arabic
2. practice islam
3. ...

I completely agree with remark.
In my opinion everyone should ask him(her)self first:
Why i want it?
What i will get from it?
And what i will have to do after i get it?

Of course not, because then i wont be authorized entry to all of europe.
